Select Honda Pre-Owned Vehicles Recognized as Safer Choices for Teen Drivers by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

  • Certain model year Honda Accord, CR-V, Element, Odyssey and Pilot vehicles rated as some of the best pre-owned vehicles for teen driver safety
  • Honda is the most durable, longest lasting brand in its class1

Several model years of Honda pre-owned vehicles have been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as part of its first-ever list of safer used vehicles for teen drivers. Research conducted by IIHS found that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers, and suggests that the type of vehicle driven has a big effect on the degree of risk. Further IIHS research showed many teens drive used vehicles lacking important safety technology, and, as a result, a list was compiled to help guide parents in making safer choices.

Honda pre-owned vehicles earning this first recognition from IIHS as among the best, safer choices for teen drivers under $20,0002 include the Honda Accord Sedan (2012 and later), Accord Coupe (2013-14), CR-V (2012 and later), Element (2007 and later) and Honda Odyssey (2011 and later). Additionally, the Honda Pilot (2006 and later) and the Honda Odyssey (2005-10) were included on the list of good choices for teen drivers under $10,0002.

“Enhancing the safety of our customers and the quality of our products is a top priority for Honda,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “Our long-term commitment to enhancing safety and durability makes Honda an ideal choice when shopping for safe, reliable transportation, new or pre-owned, for all drivers including teens.”

For added piece of mind, customers choosing a Certified Pre-Owned Honda (http://www.certified.honda.com) vehicle on this list from one of our authorized Honda dealerships, an extensive limited warranty is included. According to IHS Automotive vehicle registration statistics, Honda is the most durable, longest lasting brand in its class1.

Vehicles considered “best choices” for under $20,0002 have good ratings for side crash protection, good head restraints and seats for rear crash protection, and good roof strength to protect occupants in rollover crashes. Vehicles considered “good choices” for under $10,0002 have good or acceptable side crash protection and head restraints rated better than poor. If rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles earn a 4 or 5 Star Overall Vehicle Score, for model years 2011 and later, or 4 or 5 Stars in the front and side crash safety tests for earlier models tested under NHTSA’s old rating system.

All Honda vehicles on the list come equipped with standard Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control (what IIHS calls Electronic Stability Control or ESC) and provide good protection in moderate overlap front crash tests. According to IIHS, systems like Honda’s VSA® reduce fatal single-vehicle crash risk by about half and fatal multiple-vehicle crash risk by one-fifth (see Status Report, June 19, 2010, at iihs.org).

Honda Safety Leadership
Honda has a long history of leadership in the development and application of advanced technologies and designs meant to enhance the safety of all road users, including automobile occupants, motorcycle riders, and pedestrians. The company operates two of the world’s most sophisticated crash test facilities in the U.S. and Japan, and is responsible for numerous pioneering efforts in the areas of crashworthiness, airbag technology, collision compatibility and pedestrian safety. American Honda leads the industry for 2014 in third party crash test ratings with more models rated TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other manufacturer.

What Does it Mean to Be Honda Certified?

When we’re shopping for a pre-owned (used) vehicle, we all know it’s great to get a “certified” pre-owned vehicle, but what does that really mean? It’s all about perspective, really.

We can list all the things that our Honda mechanics check in order to certify a used vehicle as “Honda Certified” but how about we show you instead. See two minute video about what it takes be a Honda Certified pre-owned vehicle and why it’s important to car buyers.

“Honda Certified vehicles do tend to be a little bit more expensive,” said Tony Carter, general manager at Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham. “But it is worth every dollar more to have that peace of mind that you are getting a quality used vehicle, not a lemon. Our inspections are thorough and under warranty. Those two aspects alone make it worth it to buy a Honda Certified used car from Northwest Honda.”

Hondas Last Longer

A new study out shows that 75% of Honda vehicles bought 25 years ago are still on the road.

That makes them among the elite brands, if not the very best, according to a Polk study.

“One of the most important considerations for a new vehicle purchase is how long that vehicle will last and this study demonstrates that Honda quality and reliability is not just part of our hard-earned reputation but represents our industry-leading performance on the road,” said Michael Accavitti, a senior vice president of American Honda, in a statement.

According to this article, “The claim is based on data from stats keepers Polk, which looked at auto registrations by brand from 1988 to 2012. It does not include Honda’s Acura brand, which is part of the 11% of cars over the period that fall into the luxury category.”

Closer to home at Northwest Honda, we know for a fact that people consider Hondas because of their incredible longevity and resale value.

“People want Hondas because they know they keep their value if they want to resell it down the road,” said Tony Carter, general manager at Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham. “If they have no plans to resell and want to pass the car down to their kids to drive or something, Honda is also the best choice. It’s great to see these stats back up what we see every day.”

Honda Named Top Mainstream Resale Brand

Honda News YOU Can Use!

Kelly Blue Book and ALG (formerly known as Automotive Lease Guide) have named Honda as one of the best brands for resale value! In fact, ALG declared Honda to be the best mainstream brand when it comes to selling your car.

According to this article, “Toyota, Audi and Honda captured the most segment honors due to the consistent high value of all their products,” said Larry Dominique, president of ALG. “Honda was named top Mainstream Brand due to their prudent use of (sales) incentives – $1,000 lower than the mainstream average – and low rental fleet penetration.”

So if you care about resale value, then be sure to consider a Honda when you purchase your next car. Or, if you’re in the market for a quality pre-owned vehicle, then, naturally, a Honda should be at the top of your list.

“Whether it’s new or used, Hondas are well-known for their quality, reliability, and dependability,” said Tod McLauglin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Honda has such an incredible record for this that it’s natural we’d be at the top of the “Best Resale Value” brand list. It’s a great honor to be recognized for that.”

Readers of the website Whatcar.com voted Honda as the most trusted brand when it comes to buying a used vehicle.

According to this article, “Chas Hallett, editor in chief of What Car?, commented “Honda has proved time and time again that it makes great cars that are reliable, which in turn make great used car buys.”

Honda is also excited about being recognized as the most trusted brand in the used car market.

Adrian Cole, Managing Director, Universal Honda Ltd., championed the recent survey result, saying “our cars are designed to deliver an outstanding customer experience from the purchasing stage right through to the end of the car’s life. Buy a Used Honda Ridgeline for Quality, Dependability Under $25,000

It is not very often we come across articles talking about buying a used Honda, so this one talking about consumers would score big if they could buy a used Honda Ridgeline for under $25,000 caught our attention.

Some industry leaders were very complimentary of the idea of buying a used Honda Ridgeline. Here’s what Consumer Reports had to say: “While not designed for serious off-roading, it proved capable in most applications.” Some comments from owners: “Like a Subaru on steroids,” “no quality issues other than declining fuel economy” and “amazingly flexible.”

Similarly, research firm J.D. Power said, ““better than most” grades for overall dependability and predicted reliability. Power also notes that it is its highest-ranked truck for quality, performance and design. Owners like its versatile storage/cargo-carrying features, but have misgivings about the Ridgeline’s lack of power and worse-than-advertised fuel economy.”

Since the Honda Ridgeline has a start price of around $35,000, you’d certainly be lucky to score a used one for under $25,000.

“The Honda Ridgeline wasn’t designed to be a work-truck,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “It doesn’t take the abuse that a lot of other used trucks have endured. Most used Honda Ridgelines are in really good shape with minor, if any, damage to the body or paint. Of course, here at Sims Honda, used vehicles undergo rigorous inspections, so you know you will only get the best used vehicles from here.”

If you’re interested in a used Honda Ridgeline, or any used vehicle, be sure to go to the Sims Honda, Apple Valley Honda, and Northwest Honda dealership websites where you will find the best deals on all kinds of quality used cars!

2012 Honda Civic Gets Praise from MotorWeek

Much has been written about why the 2012 Honda Civic was redesigned so quickly. Like this blogger, some say it was because it was “so bad.” However, bloggers like him seem to miss the point that it was still the best selling compact car in the U.S. last year. And usually consumers know the difference between bad and good cars.

That being said, expectations were set high for the 2012 Honda Civic and some critics were disappointed. However, the folks at MotorWeek were not as evidenced by this video calling the 2012 Honda Civic energy smart and stating it is “excellence evolved.”

This critic notes that while the actual size of the car was smaller, the interior of the 2012 Honda Civic actually grew, among other positive features, including incredible gas mileage that the Honda Civic is renowned for. While the 2013 Honda Civic is an incredible redesign, the 2012 Honda Civic is still available at many Honda dealerships and, because of that quick redesign, available at an even better value.

My Awesome Experience Buying a Used Car from Sims Honda

As some of you regular readers may or may not know, we have been a one-car family (a 2009 Honda Accord that we bought from Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham) for several years. Often, my husband would ride his Honda Ruckus scooter (who we lovingly call “Scoot”) to and from work. His commute is only about five miles, but he finally decided he was too old to be riding Scoot in the rain and cold of winter months.

So, we started looking online for quality used cars and found what looked like a good fit at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. At the first meeting with our future car, I brought my father along because my husband couldn’t make it and my father is a ‘car guy.’ Having had our fair share of bad experiences with crappy used vehicles (did I mention my husband and I went through four cars in our first year of marriage. Yeah, we did), I wanted to bring him along to check it out.

Looked good.

A few days later I brought the whole family up to check out the potential newest member of our family. There was no way around it, I had to bring the three year old and the one year old to Sims Honda while my husband and I reviewed this car before ultimately buying it. Those of you who have had young children know what I’m talking about. The boredom, the getting into everything, etc.

Well, we had a fabulous experience, kids and all.

Before children, I never really appreciated how important a “family friendly buying experience” would be, but I’m here to tell you that we did not get one scowl or sideways glance as my three year old pretended to drive the Honda Pilot on the showroom floor. The guy in the nearby office simply laughed to the person he was on the phone with when my son purposefully walked into his office and waved.

The service manager recognized me from all the times I had brought in our Accord for oil changes and scheduled maintenances and didn’t seem bothered at all as my kids filled up their water cups, took candy from the billing counter candy jar or sprawled on the waiting room floor.

The salesman helping us, Don Corpolongo, was so friendly and didn’t ever seem annoyed when either my husband or myself ran off chasing one of our darlings. The staff showed our kids the musical presents under the tree and simply told them to be careful not to slam their fingers in the doors as they climbed in and out of the cars.

It really seemed like “family owned” meant something at Sims Honda.

The sales process was pretty quick and painless as Don explained all of our options. We feel really confident that we got a great used car knowing that Sims Honda takes pride in its reputation as one of the best Honda dealerships in Western Washington.

If I’m not making this clear enough, here’s the bottom line: we had a great, family friendly experience buying a great used car for a very reasonable price at Sims Honda. We would recommend buying a new or used car at Sims Honda to anyone, so give them a try the next time you are in the market for a new or used car!
