Honda Insight is “Engineering Marvel”

When you think hybrid vehicle, do you think top speed of 112 mph? What about 0-60 mph in 10.6 seconds?

Thanks to the Honda Insight, you can.

Generally, we don’t come across too many articles about the less publicized Honda Insight, Honda’s pioneering hybrid vehicle. So we were really impressed by this one that stated it was a hybrid with “a little NSX” in it.

Here’s what you may want to know: “…the Insight was, and remains, an engineering marvel. The issue with hybrids is always the weight of the batteries, right? Honda made the Insight’s body from aluminium so its kerb weight was just 850kg. Less weight means less power is required and greater efficiency results.”

And: “Powertrain specs mean we best talk performance. With a fully-charged battery, Car&Driver in the US timed an Insight from 0-60mph in 10.6 seconds, a second faster than Autocar’s time for the second-gen Insight tested in 2009. Taking times with a 50 per cent depleted battery and no IMA assist at all, the Insight’s average 0-60mph time was 12 seconds. No fireball, but that’s still quicker than today’s crop of city cars. Top speed, no doubt thanks to its 0.25Cd, is 112mph.”

Power? On a hybrid? Mind blown.

Of course, here at Honda we’ve always known what a fantastic hybrid the Honda Insight was and has become. If you want a hybrid with some personality and power, be sure to stop by Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, or Sims Honda today to take one for a test drive!

Honda Accord Hybrid Will Get 49 MPG, Beat Toyota Camry Hybrid

Honda will debut the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid this fall and it will get 49 miles per gallon beating out the Toyota Camry Hyrbid, which reportedly gets 43 mpg. The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will be available on dealership lots in October, including Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, and Sims Honda!

According to this article, “Powered by Honda’s new hybrid powertrain, the two-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive gives the driver three options: EV, Hybrid, and Engine. In EV mode, which only functions at low speeds and medium to high cruising speeds, the Accord utilizes its lithium-ion battery to run the car solely on electricity. Hybrid mode combines the 124-kilowatt electric motor with the 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine to generate quick acceleration while maintaining great fuel economy. Unlike the other modes, pure Engine mode sends the power straight to the front wheels. The Accord Hybrid is reported to achieve 49/45/47 MPG, setting a new, high standard for fuel economy in the midsize sedan class.”

With the Honda Accord reputation of dependability, reliability, and safety, consumers will have confidence in the Honda hybrid technology will take them further…for less money!

Skagit River Bridge Collapse Close to Home for Honda Dealerships

Here at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington, we got an up close and personal look at the Skagit River bridge collapse that took down both directions of I-5 just south Sims Honda in Burlington.

The sound of the failing metal of the bridge could be heard by many in the area working late that Thursday evening.

The affects of this major economic lifeline will be felt by many businesses in Skagit and Whatcom counties, including Sims Honda and Northwest Honda.

“Many business are concerned,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “Traffic has been really horrible on and off around here since it happened. And for good reason. This stretch of freeway to Canada is the fourth busiest in the nation. And, we’re concerned that locals aren’t going to want to venture out as much because of the traffic. It’s still early and only time will tell, but, hopefully, we can get the temporary bridge over the river soon and get things back to normal.”

At Northwest Honda in Bellingham there is a real concern that Canadian consumers may not want to come south of the border because of the headaches.

“The bridge collapse is about 30 minutes south of Bellingham, but many Canadians stop by on their way to shop other places in Mount Vernon, Marysville, and Seattle,” Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda said. “Some might think it’s too big of a hassle, but we want to them to know that we’re open for business and it should be smooth sailing to get to and from Northwest Honda from Canada.”

We are here to tell you that Sims Honda and Northwest Honda are open for business and we are encouraging local consumers and consumers around the state to come by. A temporary bridge is set to be in place over the river by the middle of June and traffic flows should go back to normal. Until that time, there are a couple alternate routes to get to Sims Honda that are really not too long or complicated, so don’t be intimidated by reports you hear on the news!

If you have questions about our business or the best ways to get to Sims Honda or Northwest Honda, please do not hesitate to call us. We’ll be here.

Honda CR-Z is “Fun, Affordable”

The New York Daily News wrote this glowing review of the of the 2013 Honda CR-Z. Starting at less than $20,000, the Hybrid CR-Z is the most affordable hybrid on the market.

It is also the most fun to drive.

“With 2013′s CR-Z, Honda has decided to loosen up and make what is arguably the  most fun hybrid most people can afford to actually buy or lease. Why does the  CR-Z hold forth the promise of being a hybrid that appeals to driving  enthusiasts? For starters, it is the only hybrid on sale in America sporting a  six speed manual transmission.”

That’s right, the 2013 Honda CR-Z is available with a six speed manual transmission that really gives it a lot of kick. The Honda CR-Z is also available with the more hybrid standard CVT (continuously variable transmission) for those who want even better gas mileage…by sacrificing that fun factor.

“For 2013, the electrical motor’s output is now up 5kW, to 15 kW, due to a higher  powered lithium-ion battery pack. The CR-Z posts a combined output of 130 BHP at  6000 rpm and 140 lb-ft. of torque with the manual transmission. The CVT equipped  models can only muster 127 lb-ft. by comparison.”

It is also one of the greenest hybrids on the market.

“When people want a hybrid, they often think of the Toyota Prius first,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “But just because it is one of the most well-known hybrids, doesn’t mean it’s the best.”

Did we mention that the Honda CR-Z gets 36/39 city/highway gas mileage?

“And with that great gas mileage you get performance!” McLaughlin said. “People think you have to sacrifice performance when you get a hybrid. With the 2013 Honda CR-Z, you do not.”

Stop by Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda in Bellingham, or Sims Honda in Burlington to take the new 2013 Honda CR-Z for a test drive to find out why it is the best, most affordable hybrid on the marketing.

“Honda LaneWatch is Awesome”

We LOVED this article that simultaneously mocks our reliance and desire for technology while praising the “awesome” Honda LaneWatch technology available on all trims of the 2013 Honda Accord.

According to the writer of this article, what technology don’t we need? Twitter available on our refrigerators as offered by Samsung (“I just got ice. #cold #drink #icerocks2013 #yourdrinkiswarmerthanmine“).

He also takes a hit on Toyota Infotainment system that allows you search for and buy movies tickets and also make dinner reservations while driving to pick up your date (ideally, you would’ve done that beforehand, but life happens). And for good reason. With many states passing laws outlawing handheld cell phones because they distract drivers, what part of searching for the perfect date movie and restaurant while speeding down the interstate sounds like a safe idea?

The writer lists several other good and bad technology examples but then he gets to his point: “I think Honda LaneWatch is Awesome.”

Honda LaneWatch technology works by using video to display your blindspot on the screen on your dash every time you flip your turn signal. So, as you indicate you are going to switch lanes, the screen in the dash shows you exactly what is around you so you can make a good decision (hopefully).

“I recently had a Honda Accord press car with LaneWatch, and I was so impressed by the feature that I didn’t use the passenger mirror once throughout the entirety of my time with the car. This is pretty cool: a camera that completely takes the place of a side-view mirror. Concept cars have teased the idea for years, but here I was actually experiencing it in a $25,000 Honda Accord!”

After his test drive, he admitted that he missed the technology: “Still, when used for its intended purpose, LaneWatch is tremendously helpful. The picture’s clear, it’s aimed exactly where you want, and – to help you decide if it’s safe to change lanes – it even displays three different on-screen lines: Green, Yellow, and BMW Driver…When I gave back the Accord and returned to my LaneWatch-less SUV, I began to realize just how much technology is missing from my life.”

Stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda, or Apple Valley Honda dealerships today so you can take the 2013 Honda Accord for a test drive and find out for yourself why Honda LaneWatch technology is truly “awesome.”

2013 Honda Civic is Safest Small Car on the Road

The 2013 Honda Civic the only compact car to receive the top safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

According to this article, “The 2013 Civic Sedan recently received the top 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), and the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, including a top score of Good in the new small overlap frontal collision test. Honda said it leads all automakers with every one of its tested model year 2013 vehicles earning a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.”

To repeat, the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are the only small cars to receive these prestigious safety ratings.

“Some people get a little anxious about owning and driving small cars because there are so many BIG cars on the road and there’s a real concern about safety,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “However Honda’s dedication to safety shines through with these new safety awards for the Honda Civic. Drivers don’t need to be worry about their safety when they’re driving a Honda Civic!”

Honda reinforced its frame, which allowed it pass the new off-set frontal crash that simulates a collision on the front corners of the car.

“Car shoppers cannot find a small car with higher overall safety ratings than the 2013 Honda Civic,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “Safety ratings leadership across product lines is a fundamental part of not only our strategic business plan, but also our philosophy as a company.”

Honda Voluntarily Recalls 46,000 Honda Fit Cars

On April 26 Honda issued a recall for Honda Fit vehicles from the 2012 and 2013 model years, affecting about 46,000 units in Canada and the United States.

According to the AP, “The concerned vehicles may be equipped with a faulty electronic stability control system (ESC) which may be faulty and will result in excessive yaw, or rotation. The excessive yaw rates will consequence in the vehicle’s direction of motion, by causing it to tilt too far prior to the application of the brake via the ESC,” which could result in an accident.

No injuries or accidents have been reported.

Honda dealerships like Northwest Honda, Sims Honda, and Apple Valley Honda will be able to fix the issue in affected vehicles.

“If you own a 2012 or 2013 Honda Fit and are concerned, please do not hesitate to call the dealership,” said Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda in Bellingham. “Of course, any problem will be fixed free of charge.”

Honda Sales Rise in March

The all-new 2013 Honda Accord to Honda’s sales to new heights in March, with the Accord’s 36.4% boost over last year! On the whole, Honda’s sales rose 7.1%.

“It’s amazing the difference in sales from a year or year-and-a-half ago,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda in Burlington. “Honda was struggling after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, but we’ve fully recovered and, with the help of some great new cars like the 2013 Honda Accord, we’re back on top.”

Honda’s luxury brand, Acura had sales that were up 26.3%.

“Our core models, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, continue to lead the industry where it counts,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “It’s particularly rewarding to see Accord and Civic winning new customers against a headwind of competitor incentives and value-reducing fleet sales.”

According to the article, the sales of the Honda Crosstour and Honda Pilot both rose by an impressive 11%.

“The Honda Crosstour is a vehicle that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but is a great option for people who want more than car, but not CR-V,” Hofkamp said. “The Honda Pilot has always been one of our most popular vehicles, especially for families. With tax returns coming back, I’m not surprised to see boosts with both of these vehicles.”

For your chance to take the 2013 Honda Accord, Crosstour or Pilot for a test drive, stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda, or Apple Valley Honda today.

Rear Visibility Cameras Can Save Young Lives

This touching article about a mom who accidentally ran over her young son as she backed out of her driveway illustrates exactly how rear visibility cameras, or backup cameras, could help save lives of many children around the country.

It is a sad story that has been repeated more than 1,000 times from 1990 to 2010. Oftentimes, children are injured or killed by those who love them most who simply didn’t see them behind the car.

As the article points out, “driver expectation” is a big part of the reason incidents like these occur: drivers simply don’t expect children to be around there. In the case mentioned above, no doubt this mom expected her son to be inside with her husband, but her young son somehow got outside and onto the driveway. Drivers are most careful in parks and school areas, but, in other places, where you don’t expect children to be wandering around, drivers tend to let their guard down.

So this mom, and many other moms, have made it their mission to urge the U.S. government to require rearview cameras that will allow drivers to see in their rear blind spot. Many vehicles already have rear cameras as an option, including the popular family minivan Honda Odyssey and the 2013 Honda Accord, which includes the rearview camera standard on every model.

In fact, “According to Edmunds.com, a privately held automotive information firm, 70 percent of 2012 model year vehicles have backup cameras available on one package or more.”

As is pointed out by many supporters, they believe the cost auto manufacturers claim to add cameras to every new vehicle will go down as more and more manufacturers apply it, and, so far, that seems to be true. Honda is a great example of that: instead of making the rearview camera an option for higher-end models, the 2013 Honda Accord is the first vehicle to include the backup camera standard on all trims. No doubt, this won’t be the last vehicle to do that, either.

Is having a backup camera a big selling-point for you as a car shopper? Do you think backup cameras should be required to be installed in all new cars?
