Honda’s “Follow Your Dreams” Rose Bowl Parade Float Inspires

Ok, I realize this is a bit late, but if you’re like me, you didn’t get to see the Honda 2013 Rose Bowl Parade, which was themed “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” In fact, I didn’t realize the parade was sponsored by Honda until after.

But after I realized I’d been staring at the picture of Honda’s “Follow Your Dreams” float, I knew I should share it just in case you, like me, didn’t get to see it.

I loved the Dr. Seuss theme and I think Honda made it work perfectly, especially with a couple of members of the Olympic champion women gymnastics team on board. With a little bit of automobile, a lot of whimsy, and a couple giant ice cream cones (all made of flowers). As I imagined what it would be like to go down the giant slide featured on the float, I realized “Follow You Dreams” is exactly what that float represented.

Well, that and a huge floral bill.

Honda has been a part of the Rose Bowl parade for 52 years and this is its third year as a presenting sponsor.

2013 Honda Accord Named to Safest Cars List

The 2013 Honda Accord is among the safest cars on the road according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Only the 2013 Ford Fusion and 2013 Nissan Altima were rated as highly.

According to this article, “The 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Nissan Altima also earned the top five-star overall rating in federal crash tests, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”

“Honda prides itself on designing and manufacturing some of the safest cars out there,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “The Accord has always rated as one of the safest cars, so it’s really no surprise that the 2013 is one of the top three safest according to the IIHS.”

But lest you think all of these cars are of equal safety, don’t be me mistaken. Only one of these cars passed the new test IIHS put cars under, the small offset test, which simulates the car hitting a post on the out third of the hood (where most reinforcement is). You guessed it, only the 2013 Honda Accord passed that test.

Stop by Apple Valley Honda, Sims Honda or Northwest Honda dealership to see if the safety of the 2013 Honda Accord is right for you!

Honda Develops Environmentally-Friendly Automobile Painting Process

Honda not only prides itself on innovative vehicles, but also innovative systems. Honda has applied that creativity and eye for environmental-friendliness to its automobile painting system called “Honda Smart Ecological Paint.”

According to this article, “It will reduce the amount of paint materials used, eliminate 40 percent of painting processes, and reduce 40 percent of CO2 emissions compared to traditional painting methods.”

How did Honda achieve something others in the industry have not? By developing a highly-functional material for the base coat that allows it to cut out one step of painting and one step of baking. So instead of being a four-coat, three-bake process like most automakers, Honda will use a three-coat, two-bake process.

Multiply that by the number of cars Honda kicks out and you can see how big of a difference that will make.

“In addition, Honda will also introduce a wall-mounted paint robot system with a built-in quick load, quick wash paint tank. The company said the technology will lead to a significant improvement in painting efficiency and pollution.”

Forbes.com Declares 2013 Honda Accord Car of the Week

Forbes.com Declares 2013 Honda Accord Car of the Week

We love a good, honest review of the 2013 Honda Accord. It has received bounteous positive reviews from critics and consumers alike, so it was refreshing to hear a more laid back (from possibly someone who is has much a cynic as he is a critic), but still positive.

Honestly, my favorite part of this review is how described drivers of Los Angeles freaking out when it rains. Made me laugh because that exactly what happens in Washington, too, and it rains way more here. Does that make it worse? I’ve never seen so much brake tapping and gingerly changing lanes in all my life as I silently scream “It rains 300 days out of the year here! It’s not even raining, it’s mizzling!” (Bonus points if you know what that is)

I digress…

As is pointed out by this review, the lane-change warning system of the 2013 Honda Accord came in especially handy as drivers “wiggled and waggled in nearby lanes.” No doubt that is a feature that would come in handy with our own fair-weather drivers.

While he calls the interior of the 2013 Honda Accord “bare-bones utilitarian bland,” I can think of another word for it: simple. Honda kept the interior simple because that is what most people like in their crowded lives. Need proof? The cult of iApple. Even this guy came around to say the navigation grew on him and was much more efficient than the one in the Aston Martin he drove around in. I’m not exactly sure what to think of that other than that I would expect the Aston Martin to come with a personal map reader for a navigation system, so we’ll take as a very good thing.

“ The interior is roomy and my large suitcase easily slid into the trunk with room to spare, though the car is actually over 3 inches shorter than the previous model. Honda has revisited proportions and worked the angles. It’s a small sedan that makes room for big people, particularly in those big bucket backseats.”

He points out the 2013 Honda Accord will never win in a Fast in the Furious race. So what? Who buys a Honda Accord to race it in the desert? The people who buy the 2013 Honda Accord want a car that gets 30 mpg and need an “Old Faithful” that is more than competent.

“The ninth generation has raised the bar over Accords past by ironing out discrepancies to become a more comprehensive sedan. Despite Honda’s struggles in recent years, the Accord is still a very decent car for the driver that is seeking reliability and a reasonably pleasant driving experience. In the post-tsunami reality, it’s reclaimed its rep as the little Honda that could.”

See what all the buzz is about and stop by Northwest Honda, Sims Honda or Apple Valley Honda dealership to take it for a test drive today!

Honda Recalling Pilots, Odysseys

Honda is voluntarily recalling 748,000 Honda Pilot and Odysseys that may have airbags that my not deploy properly in an accident.

The recall applies to Honda Pilots from the 2009 to 2013 model years and the Honda Odyssey from the 2011 to 2013 model years.

According to this article, “Honda said the plastic cover for the driver-side bags may not have been attached with the correct number of rivets and if rivets are missing, the airbag may not deploy properly in a crash.”

“If you have any questions or concerns about your vehicle, please do not hesitate to call us,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Your safety is this most important thing to us, to Honda, and we want to make sure your family is safe. We will inspect your vehicle free of charge and, if necessary, fix the problem at no cost to you.”

There have been no injuries reported.

If you are not sure if your vehicle is affected by this recall, “owners can check now to see if their vehicle will need the repairs by using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and going to www.recalls.honda.com or calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.”

Or, as always, call Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, or Sims Honda dealerships for more local and personalized care.

V-6 Honda Accord Coupe Makes Drivers Adjectives-Happy

We have read some really positive reviews of the V-6 Honda Accord Coupe, but this one is by far our favorite. Why?

Because the writer of this article who test-drove the V-6 Honda Accord Coupe, described it this way:

  • “Seductive, taut, responsive, satisfying.”
  • “…blood-stirring, nerve-twitching experience.”
  • “…terrific, a gem…”
  • “…you really do look for tight corners and sweeping turns…”

As you can tell, he was a fan of the V-6 Honda Accord Coupe.

“The people who have come to Sims Honda and taken the Accord Coupe for a test drive have a similar experience to this writer, although they may not use as colorful language as he did,” said Dave Pitcher, sales manager at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “People love driving the Accord Coupe. This guy tried hard to put the feeling into words, but words only give you taste. People should really come down here and try it for themselves.”

The writer also tackles the issue of the relative unpopularity of the coupe (a two-door vehicle). However, the Honda Accord Coupe has always done comparatively well and Honda expects sales of this “gem” to make up about 14% of its Accord sales (about 50,000).

Here’s my favorite quote from this review: “It’s a daily driver, yet the car’s many lovely sensations haven’t been scrubbed out in a wrong-headed attempt to “civilize” the vehicle.”

Stop by Sims Honda, Apple Valley Honda or Northwest Honda for opportunity to test drive and fall head over heels (like this guy did) for the V-6 Honda Accord Coupe.

Honda Kicks it into GEAR: Surprise Unveil at Montreal Auto Show

I didn’t even know there was a Montreal Auto Show and, apparently, that’s because it’s the same week as the Detroit Auto Show (the Montreal Auto Show should get a new events planner). So it’s no surprise that those in Montreal don’t expect many surprises because most of the concepts get unwrapped south of the border.

Well, Honda gave the Montreal a big surprise.

Honda unveiled its new concept car named the GEAR, sub-compact car built for Gen Y lifestyles: “simple and utilitarian, but also customizable, connected and full of personality.”

Dave Marek, Design Director at Honda R&D Americas explained: “Subcompact cars are usually either utilitarian, but uninspiring or they’re fun, zippy cars that are impractical and too expensive for the Gen-Y buyer. GEAR Concept tears down those walls – it’s practical but fun, customizable, connected and affordable. Everything that young, discerning urban buyers would want in a car.”

While cars that actually go into production tend to look a bit different than the concept car, we are excited to see what the Honda GEAR will look like on the outside and inside and what the engine specs will be.

Check out all the pictures HERE.

Acura NSX a Showstopper at Detroit Auto Show, to be Built in U.S.

Here is brief video (without any commentary) featuring the incredible-looking new Acura NSX at the Detroit Auto Show. It will also be the first supercar built in the U.S., probably Ohio.

“”To me, the great and exciting part about this whole thing is that the NSX is going to be the only supercar built in the United States” by a mass-market automaker, Honda sales chief John Mendel said in an interview at the show.”

We think it is incredibly cool and significant that the Acura NSX “supercar” be built in the U.S. Acura parent company, Honda, is showing its dedication to the American auto industry and economy. It will probably be a small plant because Honda expects the hybrid-powered sports car to be a selective seller, but even a small plant can make a big difference to communities and local economies.

It will make a statement like the Acura NSX makes a statement.

Last year the Acura NSX was a concept car without an interior and one of my favorite parts of this concept revealed in the video is the red (please be velvet!) interior. And here is my favorite part of the article, “…[the Acura NSX] still has the ridiculous sense of excess – huge wheels tucked under curved metal fenders, with more space dedicated to an engine than for passengers – that any vehicle hoping to be known as a supercar should have.”

Honda Unveils its Urban SUV Concept at Detroit Auto Show: Video

Honda has teased us with peek-a-boo pictures of its Urban SUV Concept and, while we liked what we saw, we were really excited to see this short video by CNET showcasing the sleek looking compact SUV at the Detroit Auto Show recently.

See the video HERE.

As the video takes us through an abbreviated two minute tour of this silver bullet with LED lights, we were pleased to see the versatility of the inside of the vehicle. The Urban SUV will regularly be able to seat five, but the back seats fold down flat to provide a lot of storage space (perfect for transporting all those things that urbanites transport). In fact, the commentator drew a very fair comparison of the Urban SUV to the popular Honda Fit (“on steroids”) that has the same kind of versatility. However, the Urban SUV is quite bit taller than the Honda Fit, so you’ll be able to get even more urban stuff in there.

I was surprised to hear that Honda’s Urban SUV is nine inches shorter than the it’s older sibling in the compact SUV family, the Honda CR-V. I surely doesn’t look nine inches shorter and with the ability to seat five AND those fold-down seats, we’re betting it doesn’t feel nine inches shorter.

Expect to see Hondas Urban SUV in markets in 2014!

2012 Honda Civic vs the 2013 Honda Civic

That title may be a little misleading. I mean, you can’t really ‘vs’ when you’re on the same team and one model is the new and improved version of the previous car, but this video is a very interesting and honest head-to-head comparison of the 2012 Honda Civic and 2013 Honda Civic.

If you’ve been following Honda news at all, you know that Honda came out with the 2012 Honda Civic that met some critics. However, as pointed out in the video, it was still the best-selling car in America. But CNN.com thinks that’s an “Awful lot of people who should’ve waited” for the 2013 Honda Civic.

And while the 2012 Honda Civic was still wildly successful with consumer, Honda believe there’s always room for improvement and, so, it took the Civic back to the drawing board and made some significant improvements. I highly recommend watching the video, but in case you don’t have 2-3 minutes, here are the highlights:

  • The 2013 Civic looks better on the outside with the new grill and lines
  • The 2013 Civic looks and feels better on the inside, even though it has the same design as the 2012;Honda upgraded the internal materials making it feel nicer
  • The steering and suspension feel better in the 2013 Civic
  • And, while the engines are the same (meaning the same, great gas mileage), the 2013 Civic is quieter and doesn’t seem as gruff.

These may not seem like big issues, but Honda took the criticism to heart and came out with a new and improved 2013 Honda Civic. This created an opportunity for buyers to purchase the improved 2013 Civic or get a great deal on the now “out-dated” 2012 Civic (again, the best-selling car of last year).

For your chance to see how improved the 2013 Honda Civic is or take advantage of deals on the ‘outdated’ 2012 Honda Civic (the best-selling car in America), stop by Sims Honda, Apple Valley Honda, or Northwest Honda dealerships today!
