Honda CR-V vs Chevy Equinox

There are a lot of quality crossovers in production right now and two of the most popular vehicles are the 2013 Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox. This article does a good job of comparing the two and, wouldn’t you know, the Honda CR-V comes out on top.

Both of these vehicles tend to attract families or couples who need to move stuff around (like dogs, camping equipment, etc.), so I’ll start with the most important comparison: storage.

“The center console of the Honda CR-V provides ample storage room that is easily within reach of the driver and front passenger that makes a great place to store maps or anything that may need to be accessed quickly and easily. The Honda crossover also has plenty of space for larger items. First, the rear seats can be folded nearly flat using a one-touch, spring-loaded lever that is easy to get to and operate. When the seats are folded down, the 2013 Honda CR-V has nearly 80 cubic feet of cargo space. The Chevy Equinox comes in with only 63.7 cubic-feet. ”

The next most important thing is probably gas mileage, which is comparable between the two. The CR-V bests the Chevy Equinox by 1 mpg city driving (23 mpg) and its a draw at 30 mpg highway. But when you add in the reliability and dependability of Honda, there’s really no comparison.

“The 2013 Honda CR-V is truly the best in its class,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “It’s a crossover that has as much storage as you could hope for. It’s easy, intuitive, fun to drive, and, well, it’s a great alternative for those families who don’t want to buy a minivan. And most families are on a budget, so you can’t argue with that gas mileage.”

2013 Honda Odyssey, 2013 Honda CRV Voted “Best Family Cars for Families” Awards by U.S. News & World Report

Both the Honda CRV and Honda Odyssey have made quite a name for themselves over the past several years, but their reputations and great family cars earned some reinforcement after they both won awards from U.S. News & World Report.

The 2013 Honda CRV and 2013 Honda Odyssey both won awards for “Best Cars for Families.”

The 2013 Honda CRV was named “Best Compact SUV for Families” and the 2013 Honda Odyssey was named “Best Minivan for Families” (like there would be an award for “Best Minivan Not for Families”).

“”If you’re looking for a top safety-rated, fuel efficient, fun-to-drive family vehicle, you can’t really go wrong with a Honda,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Both the CR-V and the Odyssey exemplify ‘family friendly’ with top safety ratings, proven Honda quality and loads of smart features to keep the driver and all passengers comfortable and connected.”

As family vehicles, safety is one of the most important factors and we are happy to report that both are Top Safety Picks by the IIHS and earned 5-start overall ratings by the NHTSA (basically, vehicles don’t get any safer than this unless they come with armored plating).

Here’s what they’re saying about the 2013 Honda CRV: “The 2013 Honda CR-V provides upscale styling, excellent fuel efficiency, and a host of standard convenience features, making it one of the most fun and functional compact SUVs in America…Compact on the outside and roomy inside, the CR-V represents an unparalleled balance of size and capability in the entry SUV segment. With its car-like interior comfort, a smooth and quiet ride, plus innovative features, the versatile CR-V is a great fit for families or individuals with an active lifestyle.”

Here’s what they’re saying about the 2013 Honda Odyssey, including it’s awesome gas mileage: “The 2013 Honda Odyssey minivan continues to lead its class in fuel economy and safety ratings, while providing spacious accommodations for up to eight passengers and a refined and engaging driving experience. The Odyssey Touring is rated at a remarkable 28 mpg,2 the highest EPA highway fuel economy rating of any eight-passenger minivan.”

“Really, you can’t go wrong with either of these vehicles,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda dealership in Wenatchee. “The 2013 Honda CRV may be more appropriate if you don’t have a lot of kids (yours or the soccer team) to haul around just because it’s got a functional space perfect for packing camping gear, the dogs, or whatever else you can think of. The Odyssey has always been the top minivan and for good reason. It’s safe, good gas mileage, and Honda really designed the details with families in mind.”

Green Car Journal Names Honda’s ECO Asist as Top 10 Green Technology

Honda’s “Ecological Drive Assist System,” ECO Assist for short, was named to Green Car Journal’s  list of top 10 green technology’s of 2013.

According to this article, “Honda said its ECO Assist technology can help drivers develop driving habits that enhance fuel efficiency by observing the speedometer background’s response to driving practices. Fuel-saving behaviors like smooth acceleration and braking make the meter glow green. Less fuel-efficient driving habits will cause the meter glow blue-green, while aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel cause the meter to glow blue.”

Honda hopes that using the ECO Assist technology will help drivers develop more fuel efficient driving habits over the long term.

“Honda is really thinking ahead with the ECO Assist technology,” said John Clough, sales manager at Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham. “Not only does the vehicle itself have technology that reduces emissions and use less fuel, but it’s also helping people become more fuel efficient in the way they drive. It’s really revolutionary.”

Honda is hoping the visual nature of the technology will be easy to use and really make a difference.

“Honda developed the driver guidance and driver feedback functions of ECO Assist to help drivers improve their fuel economy, and in turn, to also benefit our environment,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “The visual nature of the technology is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making it a more fun and rewarding experience.”

Honda is honored to be given this award by the Green Car Journal for its ground breaking technology.

“Honda’s ECO Assist system was selected as a Green Car Technology Award finalist for its innate ability to help drivers enhance their fuel efficiency,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and www.CarsOfChange.com. “In an era of increased demands on environmental performance from consumers and government alike, we wanted to highlight the innovative technologies like ECO Assist that make their incredible achievements possible.”

Honda’s ECO Assist technology is available on the 2013 Honda Civic, 2013 Honda CR-V, and the 2013 Honda Accord.

For your opportunity to check out Honda’s innovative ECO Assist technology or any other of Honda’s amazing technology, stop by Northwest Honda, Sims Honda or Apple Valley Honda today.

CR-V Redesign Possibility

The Honda CR-V has been one of the most, if not the most, popular small SUVs on the road. With each new version, it has only gotten better and, so, my interest was piqued when I saw this article with a ‘study’ of the new CR-V.

And I liked what I saw (photo is from Carscoop.com).

From Carscoop.com: “Honda’s official tuning arm created a new styling package for the latest generation CR-V comprising a front grille with a protruding chrome bar, a newly designed front bumper, chrome fender trims, side skirts, a new rear bumper with stacked exhaust outlets and a roof spoiler.”

I love the look of the new Honda CR-V that will officially debut in Japan in January. It looks…less soccer mom (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and more…”move over, I’ve got places to be.” I think that’s a subtle but bold distinction.

From this one photo, it does seem to have more of a minivan shape, but the front grill and shaping do not scream “I’ve got 3 kids in here spilling their milkshakes and throwing their fries! Would you please move over because I’m late to piano lessons!” I think it says, “I’m fierce and I’ll tailgate you until you move over to the right lane where you belong, you passive aggressive Prius!” Ok, maybe that got a little too personal (but really, are drivers of Priuses the most passive aggressive left-lane drivers ever or is it me?).

What does the new Honda CR-V look say to you?

2013 Honda CR-V Video Review

The 2013 Honda CR-V is one of the best-selling crossover SUVs in the industry. Here is a link a couple different video reviews from the Car Connection, including side-by-side comparison of 2013 Honda CR-V and the new Ford Escape. Watch the videos for all the details, but here are the highlights

  • The 2013 Honda CR-V has lots of space and gives best-in-class gas mileage
  • The 2013 Honda CR-V gets 28 city mpg/31 hwy mpg
  • It has more cargo space than the Ford Escape
  • The third row of seats can fold down with a pull of a single lever
  • The dash is attractive and easy to use
  • The 2013 Honda CR-V starts at $22,000

While the new Ford Escape might be a little zippier, you sacrifice gas mileage, which is important with gas prices so high in Northwest. It should also be noted that the Ford Escape lacks leg room up front, including for the driver, which is unfortunate because the driver is the one always in the car.

According to the Car Connection, the 2013 Honda CR-V is “best for cost-conscious families” who want “value and space.” Check the video and then come to Northwest Honda, Sims Honda, or Apple Valley Honda dealership to take the 2013 Honda CR-V for a test drive!

Honda CR-V Will Continue to Rule the Welterweight Ring

CR-V Will Continue to Rule the Welterweight Ring
In this New York Times review of the CR-V, it begins by stating the CR-V has been the best-selling car-base compact utility vehicle the last five of six (and probably would have been again if it weren’t for major natural disasters that disrupted production and distribution). And based on the reviewer findings, we can’t help but conclude the CR-V will regain its perch on top despite increasing competition from Ford and Nissan.
Instead of following the popular trend of creating a bigger, heavier, bulkier car, the 2012 CR-V took a “carefully graduated step forward rather than a shoot-for-the-moon upgrade.” The 2012 CR-V is an inch shorter, an inch lower and 50 pounds lighter; its design also makes it sleeker and more aerodynamic giving it one of the best gas mileages for this class at 23 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway.
Despite being slightly smaller, the reviewer finds that the designers of the 2012 CR-V made it roomier and seem bigger than previous models.
“People love the CR-V and they are going to love the 2012 CR-V even more,” said John Clough, Sales Manager at Northwest Honda dealership. “In addition to the roomier design, the seatbacks don’t have to be manually folded; one pull of a lever will automatically pull up the seat cushions and fold down the back seats to give you great cargo space.”
While the reviewer states that the interior looks more luxurious than it feels and actually is, we think that it is a great trade off that keeps the CR-V affordable, ranging from about $23,000 to $31,000. All of these features make it great for families and consumers.
“The CR-V is safe, sleek and easy on your budget,” Clough said. “If you are in the market for compact utility vehicle, you should really head to Northwest Honda, Sims Honda or Apple Valley Honda to test drive the CR-V. You won’t be disappointed.”
If the new CR-V is a little out of your price range, don’t forget that Northwest Honda, Sims Honda and Apple Valley Honda have new, quality pre-owned vehicles and certified used vehicles, including the CR-V.
