Honda Accord Takes Early Lead as America’s Most Popular Car in 2014 Based on Retail Registrations

  • Accord leads all passenger cars in retail new-vehicle registrations to individual car buyers for first three months of 2014
  • Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey are #1 in segment in retail new-vehicle registrations

Accord is leading in the effort to repeat its 2013 performance as the most popular new car with individual American car buyers. Through the first three months of 2014, four of Honda’s five top-selling models – Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey – each led their segments in retail registrations for the first quarter of 2014, according to a Honda analysis of new vehicle registration data from IHS Automotive.

These same four Honda models earned top retail registrations status for the full year in 2013, with Accord earning the title of America’s most popular car based on retail registrations, and Civic and CR-V achieving both retail and outright best-selling status in their respective segments.

“We’re thrilled to be leading the pack in the first lap around the track in 2014,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “In a business environment marked by intense competition and heavy incentives, we want to thank our Honda customers for the trust they continue to place in our products.”

Highlights for the Honda brand in the first quarter of 2014 include:

  • Excluding full-size pickups, the Accord, Civic and CR-V held three of the top five slots– first, third and fourth, respectively – in registrations among individual car buyers in the first quarter of 2014.
  • The Accord, with retail registrations totaling 78,355 units through March, maintained a narrow lead of less than 1,000 units over its nearest competitor. Retail registrations accounted for 98.4 percent of all Accord registrations for the period, according to Honda analysis of IHS Automotive registration data.
  • Civic retail registrations of 70,677 units led all small cars, beating the closest segment competitor by more than 10,000 units.
  • CR-V retail registrations rose 3.9 percent to 67,773 units compared to the first quarter last year, giving CR-V a more than 7,000-unit lead over the #2 selling vehicle in the segment.
  • Odyssey retail registrations of 27,748 units made it the top choice among retail minivan customers.

Honda Civic Tourer Will Help You Move

Most people don’t think of the Honda Civic as a good vehicle for moving to a new home; surely, it can’t move that many of your most beloved items, right?

Wrong.

This article from AutoExress shows how functional the Honda Civic Tourer really is and that it can, in fact, be a perfectly vehicle for helping you move.

If you can get past the fact that the author uses the word “boot” for trunk and “niggle” for…well, we’re not exactly sure, the article highlights some of the amazing features of the Honda Civic Tourer that you may not think about during a quick test drive.

  • More storage VW Golf and Ford Focus and rear seats that independently flip up “revealing another huge storage area, which proved perfect for picture frames and suitcases.”
  • More than 47 miles per gallon
  • “The Civic’s big boot made light work of the task in hand, and my large bedside chest was squeezed in without the need to fold the back seats. There was even enough space left over to pack in a load of cushions, bedding and clothes.”

See? It’s actually a very spacious, functional vehicle.

“When people think of the Honda Civic, they usually think of it as an awesome compact, commuter car,” said Tony Carter, general manager at Northwest Honda in Bellingham. “It’s definitely that, but the Honda Civic Tourer is also extremely functional with way more space and storage than you think.”

LoJack Discloses Honda Accord, Civic Most Stolen Vehicles

The Honda Accord and Honda Civic have long been a favorite of car thieves. Vehicle anti-theft device giant LoJack released an interesting study that names the Honda Accord the number one most stolen vehicle in the country; the Honda Civic is number three.

Interestingly, the most stolen color of car is black. But I digress.

Washington ranked 10th in the nation for stolen and returned cars using LoJack and had a couple cities that stood out in terms of stolen vehicles. Yakima ranks 5th and Spokane 9th!

According to the article, “While some states may score lower on overall theft rankings — as Washington does — there can be hot spots within those states that are far more active among auto thieves than the statewide data might suggest.”

“Take whatever measures you need to protect your vehicle, apparently especially if it’s a Honda Accord or Civic,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager of Apple Valley Honda dealership in Wenatchee. “We have a couple cities in Eastern Washington that have a serious reputation for car theft, protect your Honda.”

Honda Civic Recall

Honda is voluntarily recalling 9,800 2014 Honda Civic LX models to inspect the tires of the vehicles, which may have possible tears in the bead area.

According to this article, “The potential tears occurred when a supplier accidentally pinched the tire beads between the assembly equipment and the steel wheel rims while assembling the tires to the rims, the company said. Tire bead tears may create rapid air loss and tire failure, it said. Because the defect was discovered during a routine factory check, it is unlikely that many of these tires are on the street, according to American Honda. The company said it is unaware of any crashes, injuries or consumer complaints associated with the defect. ”

If you are concerned about your 2014 Honda Civic LX, please do not hesitate to contact us at Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, or Sims Honda dealerships. Any parts that need to be fixed or replaced will be done so free of charge to vehicle owners.

Honda Accord Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas Named to KBB.com’s 10 Best Green Cars of 2014 List

Industry experts at KBB.com named the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid  and the 2014 Honda Civic Natural Gas to their annual list of the 10 Best Green Cars. The editors at Kelley Blue Book were impressed by the Accord Hybrid’s superb driving experience and class-leading fuel economy ratings and by the Civic Natural Gas’ use of a domestically sourced, clean-burning fuel.

“For customers looking to purchase vehicles that have low CO2 emissions, Honda has two great options on KBB.com’s list—the fun-to-drive, fuel efficient Accord Hybrid and the Civic Natural Gas powered without a drop of gasoline,” said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “This recognition from Kelley Blue Book validates the efforts of Honda engineers who for decades have continued to work towards our goal to leave ‘Blue Skies for our Children.’”

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is designed to deliver outstanding fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive performance and, with a 50 miles per gallon EPA city fuel economy rating1, it has the highest city mpg rating of any four door sedan. The Accord Hybrid’s two-motor hybrid system, part of an expanding lineup of Honda Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrains, seamlessly blends electric-only, hybrid and engine drive modes along with powerful regenerative braking to provide responsive and efficient performance in a wide range of driving situations.

KBB.com’s honor adds to the growing list of prestigious awards for the Honda Accord Hybrid that include being named About.com’s “Best New Cars of 2014″ and Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year. The Accord Hybrid also earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) (when equipped with the available Forward Collision Warning system) and a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)2.

Also earning a spot on KBB.com’s list, the Honda Civic Natural Gas has a combined EPA fuel economy rating of 31 mpg1‡ and an estimated fuel cost savings of up to 40 percent compared to a typical gasoline-powered compact car. The Civic Natural Gas, powered 100 percent by natural gas, can be refueled in a matter of minutes, much like a conventional gasoline-powered car. New for 2014, the Civic Natural Gas Leather Navi model gains additional premium features such as leather seats, heated front seats, heated side mirrors and a six-speaker audio system. The Civic Natural Gas’ standard interior has also been upgraded for 2014 with more premium seating materials and door panel trim.

Honda Environmental Leadership
Honda’s diverse portfolio of alternative fuel vehicles has included numerous technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions including the first EV leases in California (1997 Honda EV Plus), the retail introduction of America’s first hybrid (1999 Honda Insight), delivery of the first fuel-cell electric vehicle in the U.S. (2002 Honda FCX), five generations of the Civic Natural Gas (first introduced in 1998) and the first gasoline-powered vehicles in the hands of consumers to meet stricter emissions standards. Honda also has led the Union of Concerned Scientists’ (UCS) rankings of overall vehicle environmental performance since 2000, and a Honda vehicle has been included on the list of America’s greenest vehicles from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for the past 16 years.

2014 Honda Civic is “Safe, Reliable, Fuel Efficient”

This article is a pretty straight-forward review of the 2014 Honda Civic, but the bottom line is the “Civic retains its high-scoring personality.”

Sure the author complained that the mirrors in the visors didn’t have lights and trunk didn’t have a pull down lever (I don’t think I’ve ever owned a car with one of those), but he didn’t miss the boat on the overall quality of vehicle, drivability, safety, and fuel efficiency that makes the 2014 Honda Civic the best new compact car available.

“The 2014 Honda Civic is simply one of the best cars for commuters and people who want a smaller car with great gas mileage, dependability, and safety,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager at Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Sometimes people think that smaller cars aren’t as safe and around here we get some pretty crazy weather, but with the new Civic you don’t have to compromise safety to get a smaller, more affordable, fuel efficient car.”

Not only is it safe and affordable, it is “fun to drive.”

“The revised Civic—most especially the Si—is fun to drive. It steers nicely and moves easily through curves with its all-independent suspension, stability assist and traction control systems and front/rear stabilizer bars.”

Honda Civic LX Tire Recall

Less than 10,000 2014 Honda Civic LX models are being voluntarily recalled by Honda because of possible tire damage. The recall affects vehicles manufactured Nov. 26, 2013 through Jan. 21, 2014

According to this article in Edmunds.com, “”In the affected vehicles, during mounting of the tires, the tire bead may have gotten pinched between the assembly equipment and the steel wheel rims, resulting in damage to the tire,” said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. “The tire damage could cause the tire to lose air, increasing the risk of a crash.”

No incidents or injuries have been reported.

“All Honda Civic LX owners will be notified directly by Honda,” said Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda in Bellingham. “But if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.”

Honda Civic Coupe Has Long History, Bright Future

We learned a lot about the history of the Honda Civic Coupe from this article; it was fun to read about its birth in 1972 and evolution into what we know as the Honda Civic Coupe today.

“The Honda Civic Coupe is a fun vehicle, just plain fun,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda. “If you are looking for an affordable, sporty vehicle, be sure to stop by and check out the Honda Civic Coupe.”

According to the article, “While the first generation only lasted until 1979, offering basic features with optional air conditioning and AM/FM radio, the current ninth-generation Civic Coupe offers a significantly larger amount of standard features across four different trim levels—LX, EX, EX-L, and EX-L Navi. With a variety of powertrains offered, the coupe is the first Honda car to offer Eco Assist technology in North America, setting a standard for future Hondas.”

With it’s sleek, seamless styling and borderline luxurious interior, the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe is one of the best, most affordable two door cars on the road because of it’s rich history. Stop by Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, or Sims Honda dealership to take one for a test drive!

Honda Will Replace Engine in 2006-2009 Civics with Coolant Leak

If you own a 2006-2009 with a coolant leak, Honda could replace your entire block (engine) for free, according to this article from Consumer Reports. “The free service applies to all Civics except the Hybrid and the Civic Si, and it effectively extends the original warranty to eight years, regardless of mileage.”

Leaking coolant can cause the engine to overheat and/or crack, so Honda has decided that vehicles with this issues should just get an entirely new engine.

“Honda wants to do right by the consumers who bought the Honda Civic because of its reputation for dependability and reliability,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda in Burlington. “Certainly normal engines shouldn’t be leaking coolant if they are less than 8 years old, so there’s an issue here that Honda wants to comprehensively take care of. Replacing the entire engine is no band aid fix, that’s for sure.”

If you have a 2006 to early 2009 Honda Civic, please contact Sims Honda, Northwest Honda, or Apple Valley Honda to talk to someone about getting your vehicle’s engine replaced.

Honda Civic is Top Choice for Californians in 2013

More individual Californians purchased a Honda Civic than any other vehicle in 2013, according to new-vehicle registration data now available from Polk, which was recently acquired by IHS. Individual California car buyers purchased 65,910 Civics in 2013, more than any other vehicle in the state when subtracting sales to government and corporate fleet buyers. California is the largest vehicle market in the United States.

“Retail sales leadership is the ultimate seal of approval, and Californians have made Civic the clear winner,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of automobile sales for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Our focus on individual buyers is unmatched in the industry, and reflects our commitment to Honda customers and the investment they make in our products.”

Nationally, the Honda Civic ranked as the top-selling compact car in America with total sales of 336,180 units – and was one of three Honda models in the U.S. with sales of more than 300,000 units in 2013, with the Accord, Civic and CR-V combining to sell more than one million units.

Honda has further improved the Civic for the 2014 model year with more performance, increased fuel economy, and additional new features including LaneWatch™ blind spot monitor, Smart Entry with Push Button Start, and Display Audio with 7-inch capacitive touchscreen. The 2014 Civic also marks the introduction of the HondaLink™ Next Generation connected-car technology.

“The value proposition of Civic just keeps getting better,” added Mendel.

Based on IHS Automotive, Polk U.S. new retail vehicle registration data for 2013 in the Honda small car segment.

The 2014 Civic is available as a 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe, and with gasoline, gas-electric hybrid and compressed natural gas powertrains. For customers interested in the ultimate performance Civic, there is the Civic Si Sedan and Si Coupe, both offering added performance, features and refinement for 2014.

Honda has been named the Most Trusted Brand by Kelley Blue Book for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013) and the Best Value Brand by Automotive Lease Guide for six years in a row (2008 through 2013), in part due to the consistently high resale value of its products.
