Supporting Small Businesses and Supplier Diversity
Honda desires to establish long-term relationships with suppliers based on trust and mutual benefit, and with a commitment to diversity. Working alongside minority supplier development councils and the Small Business Administration, diversity workshops educate potential ethnic minority and women-owned suppliers on Honda business operations. The workshops facilitate strategic alliances and joint ventures, and assist with loan and venture capitalization, empowerment programs and other available resources. In June, 2014 Honda joined 25 corporations for a discussion with President Obama about strengthening small business suppliers by supporting initiatives like increasing working capital, so they can grow their businesses and hire more workers.

Honda’s Award-Winning Environmental Short Film Series Takes Home Two 2014 Telly Trophies

Both short films are less than 3 minutes long and linked near the bottom of the article; we definitely recommend you take 5 minutes to watch them both and be prepared to be impressed by the ingenuity and innovation of Honda employees as they work hard to protect our environment.

Honda’s Environmental Short Film Series has received national recognition for the second consecutive year. “Never Ending Race,” a film that captures Honda’s pioneering efforts to dramatically reduce vehicle emissions over four decades, has received 2014 Telly Awards in two online video categories: Green/Eco-Friendly and Social Responsibility. The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding video and film productions. With nearly 12,000 entries from five continents, this year’s competition was one of the most sought-after in history.

Honda’s Environmental Short Film Series highlights remarkable initiatives – dreamed up and developed by Honda associates – that fulfill the company’s vision for reducing its environmental impact and creating a sustainable future. “Never Ending Race,” the third film in the series, tells the story of Honda’s industry-leading efforts to reduce vehicle emissions, and how its technology leadership led to more stringent exhaust emissions standards. Today, as a result, smog-forming emissions from new vehicles are one one-thousandth of 1970 levels.1 The video has garnered more than 130,000 views online since its release.

“Our greatest challenge in creating “Never Ending Race” was to successfully capture in just four minutes a story that unfolded over four decades,” said Marcos Frommer of Honda North America, Inc., one of the producers of the film series. “In accepting this award, Honda thanks its associates – past and present – who have worked to reduce vehicle tailpipe emissions with the same competitive spirit and vigor that defines our racing spirit.”

The Honda Environmental Short Film Series, featured on Honda’s YouTube Channel, was launched in August 2012 with the film, “Paint by Numbers,” which told the story of Honda engineer Shubho Bhattacharya who, inspired by his belief that global climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind today, developed technology to reduce energy use in the auto body-painting process at Honda manufacturing plants in North America. The second film, “Every Drop Counts,” released in October 2012, tells the story of how a retired plant engineer’s sketch inspires a team of associates to generate clean, renewable energy using a simple but ingenious device. “Paint by Numbers” was awarded two 2013 Telly Awards.

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The Honda Accord was the best-selling car with individual American car buyers in 2013 and was joined by three other Honda models – the Civic, CR-V, and Odyssey – as retail sales leaders in their respective segments in 2013, according to new-vehicle registration data compiled by Polk, which was recently acquired by IHS. The Accord, built in Marysville, Ohio1, also had the No. 1 produced car in America in 2013.

U.S. Car Shoppers Propel Honda Accord to #1 in Retail Sales in 2013; Four Honda Models Take Best-in-Class Leadership based on Polk New-Vehicle Registrations

Cumulatively, the Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey posted retail sales of more than 1.11 million units in 2013, each earning the business of more than 300,000 individual American car buyers. Excluding full-size pickups, only one other model across the entire industry posted retail sales of more than 300,000 units in 2013.

“Our focus on retail sales to individual buyers has a direct correlation to the high resale value of Honda products, which is a key factor in the value proposition for our customers,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of automobile sales for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We want to thank car buyers for making four Honda vehicles America’s top choices, purchased one car at a time.”

Additional highlights from the Polk /IHS Automotive data included:

  • Honda’s 2013 retail sales rose 8.4 percent from year-ago totals to 1,332,576 Honda cars and light trucks
  • Individual sales to retail car buyers made up 98.1 percent of all American Honda sales in 2013, compared to an average of 81.7 percent for all other non-luxury vehicles
  • Accord retail sales in 2013 rose12.2 percent to 360,089
  • In addition to being retail sales leaders, both the Civic and CR-V ranked as the overall best-selling models in their respective segments for the third consecutive year, and both saw retail sales and registrations jump 8.2 percent in 2013
  • The Odyssey also captured an impressive 32.2 percent of the U.S. retail registrations for minivans in 2013, selling nearly 25,000 more vehicles than the nearest competitor in the segment

Honda has been named the Most Trusted Brand by Kelley Blue Book for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013) and the Best Value Brand by Automotive Lease Guide for six years in a row (2008 through 2013), in part due to the consistently high resale value of its products.

Four Honda Vehicles Earn Recognition on ACEEE’s List of “Greenest” and “Greener” Vehicles of 2014

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire- — Four Honda vehicles have earned recognition from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for superior environmental performance, including three that ranked in the top ten among the ACEEE’s “greenest vehicles of 2013.” In the ACEEE’s annual “Green Book® Online” ranking of environmentally responsible vehicles, the Honda Civic Hybrid placed fifth overall and in the top three among gasoline-powered vehicles, while the Civic Natural Gas and the Insight placed ninth and tenth, respectively.

Moreover, the fuel-efficient Odyssey was the highest ranked minivan and was named as a “greener choices of 2014.” This is the 16th straight year that multiple Honda vehicles have been named to the top 12.

“Honda has embraced the challenge to bring to market more energy-efficient mobility solutions to reduce CO2 emissions,” said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “ACEEE’s recognition of Honda’s fuel-efficient models over the past 16 years, including a diverse lineup of alternative fuel vehicles, is recognition of the Honda engineers who continue to work towards our goal to leave ‘Blue Skies for our Children.’”

The ACEEE ranking system uses a singular measure that incorporates fuel economy and health-related pollution impacts plus global warming and upstream emissions. All vehicles are analyzed and given a “Green Score” which is used to rank each vehicle’s total environmental performance, including a list of the 12 “greenest” and 12 “meanest” vehicles along with a ranking of greenest vehicles by segment.

Honda’s Environmental Leadership
Honda has a long history of environmental innovation, including the retail introduction of America’s first hybrid (1999 Honda Insight), delivery of the first fuel-cell electric vehicle in the U.S. (2002 Honda FCX) and the first gasoline-powered vehicles in the hands of consumers to meet stricter emissions standards, including the 1996 Honda Civic, the first gasoline Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV); the 1998 Honda Accord, the first gasoline Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV); the 2000 Honda Accord, the first gasoline Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) in the hands of consumers; the 2001 Civic Natural Gas, the first vehicle to qualify as an Advanced Technology Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV); and, most recently, the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In, the first Super Ultra-Low Emissions 20 Vehicle (LEV 3/SULEV 20), now available for lease and sale in California and New York state.

2013 Honda Fit Wins Two “Best Car for the Money” Awards from U.S. News & World Report

The Honda Fit is one of Honda’s most popular vehicles, quickly gaining on the likes of the Civic and Accord. With two new awards from U.S. News & World Report, the 2013 Honda Fit will likely continue with its upward trend.

U.S. News & World Report awarded the 2013 Honda Fit as “Best Subcompact for the Money” and “Best Hatchback for the Money” beating out other popular models by Toyota, Subaru, and all other major manufacturers.

“The Fit brings truth to the concept that big things can come in small packages,” said Mike Accavitti , vice president of national marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With an amazingly roomy interior, snappy styling, great driving dynamics and industry-leading Honda quality, Fit proves that small cars can provide value well beyond their size.”

The gas mileage, space, and Honda dependability has made the Honda Fit not just popular with experts and critics, but also with the average buyer.

“Lots of people come to Sims Honda thinking they either want an Accord or a CR-V,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “But they end up driving away in a Honda Fit after they get in and realize it has a lot of space, gets awesome gas mileage and has a very versatile interior. It has almost 91 cubic feet of passenger space and 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats! And it comfortably seats five people…unless you want to fold down the seats flat to utilize that space.”

According to the press release, “…the exclusive 60/40 split rear Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. With its one-motion dive-down functionality, it can fold flat into the floor to provide a maximum 57.3 cu-ft. of rear cargo volume. Compared to any other vehicle in the subcompact class, the five-passenger Fit provides the lowest, flattest cargo floor and the most cargo volume. The Fit’s interior thus can easily be converted to tall-object mode or long-object mode based on the shape of the cargo.

Here are some of the other awards earned by the 2013 Honda Fit

  • A “Top Safety Pick” rating by the IIHS
  • A 2013 Residual Value Award from ALG
  • A 2013 Best Resale Value Award from KBB.com
  • Recognized as a “greener choice of 2013″ by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)
  • A seven-time Car and Driver magazine “10Best Cars” award winner
