Honda CR-V, Honda Accord Win Head-to-Head Shootout on Cars.com
This is a continuation of our thoughts on how Hondas won all three head-to-head shootouts that Cars.com put together for vehicles in the $16,000 Subcompact category, the $25,000 Compact SUV Category, and the $26,000 Midsize Sedan category. In this blog, we will cover how the 2012 Honda CR-V won the $25,000 Compact SUV shootout and the 2013 Honda Accord won the $26,000 Midsize Sedan category.

How the 2012 Honda CR-V won the $25,000 Compact SUV Shootout:
- “The verdict: ”The Honda CR-V is one of the most well-rounded vehicles in this segment. It’s a comfortable cruiser with a solid powertrain, a compliant ride and plenty of features,” Geiger said. “The brand’s history of strong reliability helps tip the scale.”
- “EPA-estimated 23/31 mpg city/highway; we observed 30.3 mpg combined (the second best mpg tested)”
- Most of the features that are “extra” on the other models, come standard on the base model of the 2012 Honda CR-V. You can look forward to the back-up camera, sunroof, HD and satellite radio, Bluetooth, USB, and fold-flat back seats.

Moving on to how the 2013 Honda Accord won the $26,000 Midsize Sedan shootout and some of the highlights we picked out:
- “The verdict: ”Like the Camry, the Accord does most things reasonably well, and its nimble handling and eager drivetrain add a little excitement the Toyota lacks.”
- “Honda’s latest gander at a continuously variable automatic scores a hit,” Mays said. “The Accord’s transmission responds in a jiffy, serving up passing power in concert with your right foot.” Wiesenfelder “found it surprisingly athletic and light on its feet, closer to the Fusion than the others dynamically, but with quick, better-weighted steering.”
- One of the criticisms was that the cupholders “imprison small drinks.” I’ll take that.

Honda’s Lineup for Tokyo Auto Show
Honda revealed its lineup for the Tokyo Auto Salon will include a lot of speed, a lot of presentation, and, dare we say, a lot of pizzazz (including a vehicle covered in rhinestones. Too bad this article doesn’t include pictures of that one).
Honda will display another vehicle in its N-One series, the Modulo Style, which looks boxy, but fun to drive in the cities where space and parking are tight. The racing models Honda has included seem to reference its sporty past and cutting edge future.

The Honda CR-V has been one of the most, if not the most, popular small SUVs on the road. With each new version, it has only gotten better and, so, my interest was piqued when I saw this article with a ‘study’ of the new CR-V.
And I liked what I saw (photo is from Carscoop.com).
From Carscoop.com: “Honda’s official tuning arm created a new styling package for the latest generation CR-V comprising a front grille with a protruding chrome bar, a newly designed front bumper, chrome fender trims, side skirts, a new rear bumper with stacked exhaust outlets and a roof spoiler.”
I love the look of the new Honda CR-V that will officially debut in Japan in January. It looks…less soccer mom (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and more…”move over, I’ve got places to be.” I think that’s a subtle but bold distinction.
From this one photo, it does seem to have more of a minivan shape, but the front grill and shaping do not scream “I’ve got 3 kids in here spilling their milkshakes and throwing their fries! Would you please move over because I’m late to piano lessons!” I think it says, “I’m fierce and I’ll tailgate you until you move over to the right lane where you belong, you passive aggressive Prius!” Ok, maybe that got a little too personal (but really, are drivers of Priuses the most passive aggressive left-lane drivers ever or is it me?).
What does the new Honda CR-V look say to you?
This article/list was an interesting compilation of cars, trucks, bikes and robots that make up what the writer said are the top ten things at the Honda Collection Hall in Japan. Honestly, a lot of these vehicles were vehicles I had never heard of, but it was interesting to read where they had a place in cultural history, in racing history, and in Honda’s history.

This is an encouraging article for anyone who may be in the market to be a new or used vehicle in 2013. While it starts out talking about how the industry will increase a good amount (4 percent), but not as good as 2012 (increased about 14 percent!), I think the real important stuff that applies to everyday folk is in the middle to end of the article.
Here’s what you want to know if you think you want to buy a car in 2013 (and you should):
- Interest rates will remain low. The economy is still recovering and so the government is doing what it can to keep interest rates low. This is excellent news for anyone taking out a loan to purchase a vehicle.
- Credit will be more widely available. Unlike a couple years ago when even people with perfect credit couldn’t get a loan, things are starting to loosen up a little and now, it appears, most people who are qualified should be able to get a loan.
- TONS of competition. The big brands are battling for buyers. The dealerships are battling for buyers. And the vehicles are just getting better. With the Big Three getting bailed out they have trimmed the fat and realized they need to step it up. Even brands like Honda have stepped it up and we are sincerely excited about some of the Honda vehicles coming out in the next year.
- Think about buying a used car. Edmunds.com estimates that nearly 500,000 leases will be up, which means a big influx of used cars…which means less expensive used cars.
- Edmunds.com also predicted more consumers needing trucks as the economy picks up and more builders and contractors need them to do their jobs.
“Interest rates will remain low if you’re buying car, and credit is much more widely available than years ago,” said Michelle Krebs of Edmunds.com. “There will also be a lot of competition and a ton of incentives, so consumers can do a little more bargaining in the showroom,” Krebs said.
Local dealerships are looking forward to what seems like the perfect storm for consumers.
“We are excited for people who have been wanting to buy a new or used car, but were concerned about not being able to a loan, inventory, or that it just wasn’t the best time,” said Bobby Maynard, new car manager at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “There are a lot of positive things working for consumers in 2013, so if you are thinking about buy a new or used car, you should really come down and check us out.”

As this article points out, Honda has had a “bumpy” couple years. With the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011 causing major disruptions in manufacturing and some mixed critical reviews of the Honda Civic (consumers seemed more than happy with it), Honda had a little bit more work to do than normal to catch up.

Many consumers and critics see the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry as head-to-head rivals…and for good reason. However, there is one recent safety test that proved the 2013 Honda Accord safer than the Toyota Camry as the Camry failed to receive a “Top Safety Pick-Plus” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety while the Accord earned such honors (the Camry earned a “Top Safety Pick” minus the “Plus”).
The sticking point for the Toyota Camry was that it earned a “Poor” rating for the “small overlap” or “narrow offset” safety test, which simulates a car striking a pole or post on the outer quarter of the hood (most reinforcement is in the middle of the hood).
The 2013 Honda Accord passed the small overlap test with flying colors; the only vehicle sold in the United States to do so.
“We want vehicles to be as safe as possible for everyone,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Certainly, there’s no joy for us that the Camry failed the narrow offset safety test, but it is definitely something people will want to consider as they weigh whether to buy a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord.”
As you make your pros and cons lists of whether to buy a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, no doubt that safety will be near the top of those lists. So be sure to take note that only one of these vehicles earned the “Top Safety Pick-Plus” from the IIHS.

We love reading articles about how Honda vehicles rethink and reinvent a vehicle category. According to this article, the 2013 Honda Ridgeline has done just that. No longer does being a truck mean brute strength with bulky steering. No, according to this writer, the 2013 Honda Ridgeline fills in the “reality gap” if you don’t need your truck to climb Mount Everest or tow the Space Shuttle down the road.

We’ll take the tradeoff, because with the independent rear suspension, the Ridgeline rides like a dream, and has precise, confident handling that makes most competitors’ trucks feel like they’re from the Stone Age.”
- Utility: “We especially liked the 60/40 split rear seats whose bottoms easily flip up to create a large storage area with a flat floor. The bed is equally impressive, with a dual-action tailgate that not only flips down like a traditional truck but can also swing to the side for easy loading and unloading. Brilliant. We’re also crazy for the in-bed trunk, a weatherproof 8.5 cubic foot lockable storage area under the bed. Made of the same tough composite as the bed, it’s a handy place to store valuables out of site, or a perfect place to throw a couple sets of golf clubs.”

Occasionally, we find articles that have a great bottom-line point…but they are so tedious and boring to read because of the way they are written. Point and case is this article that repetitiously calls the 2013 Honda Accord V6 Coupe “the car…” and almost all the sentences are very short and choppy, which slowly lulls your brain to sleep until you can’t remember the paragraph you just read.
Well, we are here to the rescue, because we think the information in this article is great, but we want to save you from actually having to read it.
- The 2013 Honda Accord V6 Coupe will feature an engine with 3.5 liter capacity and has been used in other
powerful cars, so we look forward to seeing it here.
