Greenest Car Shopping Areas…Don’t Include Seattle

I thought I knew what to expect as I read this article in honor of Earth Day that listing the locations of America’s greenest car shoppers.

Until I saw the list, that is. Here is the list cities most buying hybrids, electric vehicles, and other green cars:

10. Sacramento—Stockton—Modesto, California

9. Medford—Klamath Falls, Oregon

8. Lima, Ohio

7. Honolulu, Hawaii

6. Washington D.C.

5. Eureka, California

4. Portland, Oregon

3. San Diego, California

2. Monterey—Salinas, California

1. San Francisco—Oakland—San Jose, California

There were a couple things about this list that stood out to me. The first is that Lima, Ohio is eighth on the list (where is Lima, Ohio?). The second, and most surprising to me, is the fact that Seattle (and surrounding area) is not on the list at all (and that Lima, Ohio is). As a Puget Sound driver, it seems crazy to me that Seattle is not on the list because I see so many hybrid vehicles on the road.

The article is right that it makes sense that the list would be full of West Coast cities because it has”…abundant charging stations, special perks for eco-friendly drivers in some western cities and robust infrastructure, the West Coast is well equipped to cater to the needs of eco-conscious drivers.” This seems especially true for Seattle, which is also a city of early adopters and prides itself on its technological know-how.

However, Seattle is still oddly missing from this list.

What do you think? Was this a mistake on the part of Cars.com or is there a reason Seattle didn’t make the list?

Order Your Acura NSX from Honda Now…Wait Until 2015 to Get it

According to this article, Honda is taking order for the Acura NSX now…but production on the supercar doesn’t start until 2015.

Judging by the pictures and the video in the article, it seems well worth getting on the list and waiting. Vroom! The Acura NSX debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2012 and since then, buyers have been lining up…and Honda has been taking names…and deposits.

“The new NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V6 engine mated to  Honda’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system. It will  also utilize two electric motors that will power the front wheels for extra grip  and stability at high speeds but also to reduce pollution and increase fuel  economy.”

The Acura NSX will be for sale in the UK in a couple years, but if residents there want to ensure they get one, they can put down a deposit of $7,626 (US).

What do you think? Based on the pictures and limited information, would you put a deposit down for the Acura NSX and have the patience to wait for a couple years to get it?

Honda Voluntarily Recalls CR-V, Odyssey

Honda announced that is voluntarily recalling more than 225,000 Honda CR-Vs and Honda Odyssey minivans from the 2012 and 2013 model years. Also effected by the recall is the 2013 Acura RDX SUV.

According to this article, “Honda says the device that stops drivers from shifting out of park without a foot on the brake may not work properly, particularly in below-freezing temperatures.”

“If you have any questions about this recall or the safety of your vehicle, please call us,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Honda’s first priority is safety and so is ours, so we want to fix this for you if there’s a problem.”

Honda will notify owners by mail by mid-May.

If you own a 2012 or 2013 Honda CR-V or Odyssey, do not hesitate to contact the professional staff at Apple Valley Honda, Sims Honda, or Northwest Honda.

Honda Teases New Vehicles for Shanghai Auto Show

Honda and luxury brand Acura release a couple photos teasing two concept vehicles that will be showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show in a couple weeks.

The photos, while lacking detail, look amazing. The brief article that comes with the photos states that the Honda photo looks like a minivan and, while it may be that, it looks like it could also be a full-sized crossover or larger CR-V-type vehicle. The Acura photo looks like a full-sized that could be bigger than the Acura MDX.

We won’t have to wait long to see picture of the real vehicles because the Shanghai Auto Show is at the end of the month. What would like you like to see from Honda? A made-for China minivan or a full-sized crossover?

Honda Sales Rise in March

The all-new 2013 Honda Accord to Honda’s sales to new heights in March, with the Accord’s 36.4% boost over last year! On the whole, Honda’s sales rose 7.1%.

“It’s amazing the difference in sales from a year or year-and-a-half ago,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda in Burlington. “Honda was struggling after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, but we’ve fully recovered and, with the help of some great new cars like the 2013 Honda Accord, we’re back on top.”

Honda’s luxury brand, Acura had sales that were up 26.3%.

“Our core models, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, continue to lead the industry where it counts,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “It’s particularly rewarding to see Accord and Civic winning new customers against a headwind of competitor incentives and value-reducing fleet sales.”

According to the article, the sales of the Honda Crosstour and Honda Pilot both rose by an impressive 11%.

“The Honda Crosstour is a vehicle that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but is a great option for people who want more than car, but not CR-V,” Hofkamp said. “The Honda Pilot has always been one of our most popular vehicles, especially for families. With tax returns coming back, I’m not surprised to see boosts with both of these vehicles.”

Honda Plans to Amaze India

Normally we try to stick to topics that directly affect auto consumers in the United States and specifically the Pacific Northwest, but the auto world and internet is abuzz about the all new Amaze that is only available in India.

What is the big deal?

The Amaze is Honda’s first diesel vehicle.

This is a very interesting interview with CEO and president of Honda India, Hironori Kanayama, where, of course, he says Honda is hoping to tap into India’s potentially HUGE buying power, which is only second to China.

“Honda’s global sales target for 2016 is 6 million vehicles. Currently, Honda sells about 4 million globally,” Kanayama said. ”The target is almost a 50% increase. I think India must play a very important role to achieve such a high global target. So, India’s operations will be the fastest-growing operations for Honda globally.”

The low price and best-in-class mileage of the Honda Amaze is sure to make the Honda Amaze a hit and ensures it will be ‘the breath of fresh air’ for the industry it promises to be. According to this article, “Amaze should be a game changer for the company. It marks a big shift in the way Honda looks at India. Managing director Hironori Kanayama says Amaze will help expand Honda’s market presence from just a tenth of it to half. And with a diesel variant, Honda is now ready to take on market leader Maruti Dzire. Industry experts expect Amaze will sell between 3,500 and 4,000 units every month in the near future. ”

Last year was rough for global auto sales, but Honda is in good shape as it’s recovered from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that deeply impacted manufacturing and shipping. The Honda Amaze should only help Honda’s global presence has Honda continues its hunt for world domination. Or something like that. :)

Rear Visibility Cameras Can Save Young Lives

This touching article about a mom who accidentally ran over her young son as she backed out of her driveway illustrates exactly how rear visibility cameras, or backup cameras, could help save lives of many children around the country.

It is a sad story that has been repeated more than 1,000 times from 1990 to 2010. Oftentimes, children are injured or killed by those who love them most who simply didn’t see them behind the car.

As the article points out, “driver expectation” is a big part of the reason incidents like these occur: drivers simply don’t expect children to be around there. In the case mentioned above, no doubt this mom expected her son to be inside with her husband, but her young son somehow got outside and onto the driveway. Drivers are most careful in parks and school areas, but, in other places, where you don’t expect children to be wandering around, drivers tend to let their guard down.

So this mom, and many other moms, have made it their mission to urge the U.S. government to require rearview cameras that will allow drivers to see in their rear blind spot. Many vehicles already have rear cameras as an option, including the popular family minivan Honda Odyssey and the 2013 Honda Accord, which includes the rearview camera standard on every model.

In fact, “According to Edmunds.com, a privately held automotive information firm, 70 percent of 2012 model year vehicles have backup cameras available on one package or more.”

As is pointed out by many supporters, they believe the cost auto manufacturers claim to add cameras to every new vehicle will go down as more and more manufacturers apply it, and, so far, that seems to be true. Honda is a great example of that: instead of making the rearview camera an option for higher-end models, the 2013 Honda Accord is the first vehicle to include the backup camera standard on all trims. No doubt, this won’t be the last vehicle to do that, either.

Is having a backup camera a big selling-point for you as a car shopper? Do you think backup cameras should be required to be installed in all new cars?

Tax Season Brings Auto-Buying Boon?

Happy Tax Day!

Right?

Whether it’s happy or not, it’s here (and almost gone). And, according to this article, people getting tax refunds might be spending them on purchasing cars.

The article stated that the average tax refund is around $2,800…which is a nice down payment on a car considering that most people spending their tax refunds are purchasing “entry-level” vehicle. If you also consider the fact that people getting refunds generally file their taxes sooner, consumers could have hit some really great sales as dealerships cleared out lots of old inventory to make room for the newer models.

If you are getting a tax return, what do you plan on spending it on? A 2013 Honda Accord? If you already got your tax return, what did you spend it on?

Massive Airbag Recall Affects Honda, Toyota, Nissan Vehicles

More than 3.4 million cars are being recalled, including 1.1 Hondas and 1.7 million Toyotas, because airbags on the passenger front airbag needs to be replaced. All of the faulty airbags were manufactured by the same Japanese supplier, Takata Corp.

According to a statement from Honda, “”It is possible that the passenger front airbag inflators in affected vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which may cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury.”

Honda has reported one occurrence of the malfunction and Toyota has reported five.

The vehicles affected by the recall include 2001-2003 Honda Civics, 2001-2003 Honda CR-Vs, and 2002 Honda Odyssey minivans.

“If anyone is worried about the airbags in their vehicle, please give us a call,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda dealership in Wenatchee, Wash. “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our drivers and their passengers, so we want to make sure everything is as it should be.”

If you own a vehicle affected by this recall, please do not hesitate to contact Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, or Sims Honda dealership.

“Admirable” Honda Accord Made Even Better With 2013 Model

We never get tired of reading awesome reviews of the 2013 Honda Accord. This review does nice, honest job if listing the 2013 Honda Accord’s specs and comparing to other models like the Toyota Camry, but the last paragraph says it all:

The folks at Honda did a great job of making the already admirable Accord even better in 2013. The combination of appearance, performance, convenience and reliability will definitely keep the Accord remain at or near the top of this highly competitive segment.”

We have mentioned many times the technology that comes standard on all 2013 Honda Accords, including the backup camera and LaneWatch blind spot camera, but this article does a great job of describing the interior and experience of the 2013 Honda Accord.

“There is no doubt that if you come to Northwest Honda and take the 2013 Honda Accord for a test drive, you will be impressed with the quality of materials and design in the interior of the car,” said John Clough, sales manager at Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham, Washington. “Potential buyers will also be interested to know there is V6 engine option, which is an option that is disappearing in the industry.”

Here is some bullet point information from the article we think would be helpful in convincing you that the 2013 Honda Accord is the car for you:

  • “Performance: 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, 185 horsepower; 3.5-liter, V6, 278 horsepower
  • Mileage estimate range: 21-36 mpg
  • Price: $21,680 to $33,430
  • Warranty: 3years/36,000 miles; drivetrain 5 years/60,000 miles; corrosion 5 year/unlimited”

Do yourself a favor and stop by Northwest Honda, Sims Honda, or Apple Valley Honda dealership today to take the 2013 Honda Accord for a test drive!
