CR-Z Sport Hybrid Gets Supercharged with HPD Street Performance

  • Accessory supercharger kit boosts powertrain output to 197 hp
  • Full range of CR-Z street performance parts from HPD now on sale

Supercharged performance for the street is now available in the Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe through a new dealer-installed Honda Performance Development (HPD) supercharger kit. Best known as Honda’s North American racing company, HPD developed a full line of street performance accessories for the CR-Z and first revealed them at the 2013 SEMA Show. With the debut of the supercharger kit this month, all of the HPD street performance components for the CR-Z are now available at Honda dealers in the United States.

“The CR-Z was the first hybrid to prove that efficiency doesn’t have to come at the cost of sportiness and fun,” said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development. “With HPD street performance accessories, including the new supercharger kit, the CR-Z will surprise everyone again with even higher levels of performance directly inspired by our on-track racing efforts.”

Available for the 2013 and 2014 CR-Z, the HPD supercharger kit boosts total powertrain output to 197 hp1 (vs. 130 hp in the stock 2013 and 2014 CR-Z with manual transmission) and includes the HPD air-to-air intercooler, high-flow fuel injectors, an ECU calibrated to meet CARB AT-PZEV regulations with 91 octane fuel and the HPD air filter system. Honda’s Suggested Retail Price of the kit is $5,495, not including dealer installation, which is priced similarly to popular aftermarket supercharger kits but is engineered and backed by Honda. The HPD supercharger kit maintains the balance of customer’s 5 year/ 60,000 mile Honda limited powertrain warranty when installed by a Honda dealer. The HPD supercharger kit is available exclusively for CR-Z manual transmission models and HPD has developed an optional limited slip differential and HPD sport clutch for those customers looking for an even higher level of performance.

When equipped with available HPD street performance accessories, the CR-Z (automobiles.honda.com/cr-z/hpd.aspx) can feature a variety of track-proven, street-reliable performance upgrades. HPD-developed powertrain modifications – tested on-track – include a high-efficiency centrifugal supercharger; HPD air-to-air intercooler; high-flow fuel injectors; an ECU calibrated to meet CARB AT-PZEV regulations with 91 octane fuel; HPD air filter system; and HPD sport exhaust. Chassis improvements include HPD sport dampers, coil springs with reduced ride height, 300mm diameter disc brakes and HPD 18-inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The CR-Z is completed by a graphics package including front lip and tail spoilers, rear diffuser and HPD badge.

All-New 2015 Honda Fit Earns a 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK Rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

  • Voluntary product update will enable early-production vehicles to match the 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK rating
  • No other manufacturer has more top-safety rated vehicles built in America than American Honda1

The 2015 Honda Fit (http://automobiles.honda.com/fit/), the standout choice in the subcompact segment, has received a 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK ratingfrom the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This includes a top rating of GOOD in four IIHS crash test modes and an ACCEPTABLE score in the Insurance Institute’s stringent small overlap frontal crash test. No vehicle in its class has received a higher rating than Fit in this IIHS test procedure.

“Honda’s deep-rooted commitment to safety and to our customers is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that we were not satisfied with anything but a TOP SAFETY PICK for the new 2015 Honda Fit,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of auto operations at American Honda. “Vehicle by vehicle, our engineers are passionate about developing safety technologies that consumers have come to trust and expect from Honda.”

An early-production 2015 Honda Fit was originally tested in March for the 2014 award year by IIHS and earned a GOOD in four out of five IIHS crash test modes and a MARGINAL score in the challenging small overlap frontal crash test. Demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, Honda engineers responded quickly with a modification to the Fit’s front bumper structure. Subsequent testing by IIHS confirmed the success of the design change, which has been incorporated into new vehicle production.

“Though there is no regulatory requirement to do this, in keeping with Honda’s long-standing commitment to safety and focus on its customers, Honda has voluntarily engineered a product update which will allow all early-production vehicles to share the 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK rating,” said St. Cyr.

In addition to changes in production models, approximately 12,000 early-production 2015 Honda Fit vehicles will be eligible for a product update involving a front bumper beam replacement, which will be completed free of charge at any Honda dealer in the United States. This update allows all early-production vehicles to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK rating and the same score in the small overlap test as recently built models. Honda is announcing this voluntary product update to encourage all owners that purchased an early-production vehicle to take their new Fit to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this update from Honda. At that time, Fit owners will also have access to a special phone line that will allow them to determine if their vehicle is eligible for the update or if it already has the updated bumper design from the factory. Customers can access this information beginning in late-September by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.

About the Fit
Already the benchmark subcompact in terms of passenger and cargo space and innovative features, occupant safety for the 2015 Honda Fit is further enhanced through the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The next-generation ACE™ body structure improves frontal crash energy management through a wider range of offset and oblique collision modes. In addition, other body reinforcements work in tandem with the strengthened body structure to better maintain the occupant compartment volume during frontal collisions by providing additional crash energy pathways to help mitigate the forces transmitted to the passenger compartment.

Key New Safety and Driver-Assistive Features:
In addition to including the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure, the 2015 Fit features a host of standard active and passive safety features and includes many standard and available driver-assistive technologies.

  • Driver and Front Passenger SmartVent™ Side Airbags
  • Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor
  • Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) – a feature of VSA
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Expanded View Driver’s Mirror
  • Honda LaneWatchTM
  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines

Standard safety equipment on all 2015 Honda and Acura models includes the next-generation of Honda’s ACE™ body structure, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); side curtain airbags (some vehicles equipped with a rollover sensor as well); dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and front side airbags.

Badge of Honor: Older Honda Accords are Most Stolen

The reliability of the Honda vehicles throughout the years has made them the most stolen vehicles. According to this article, car theft has actually got down because of new, high-tech ignitions. But older Hondas are still susceptible and are, apparently, the most desirable, to car thieves.

“Criminals generally have not been able to circumvent the technology or make counterfeit keys….Instead, criminals have stuck to stealing older cars. You can see this in the pattern of thefts of America’s most stolen car, the Honda Accord. About 54,000 Accords were stolen in 2013, 84 percent of them from model years 1997 or earlier, according to data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.”

But older vehicles are not worth as much, so thieves have to steal more of them. And because Hondas are so reliable and last so long, that’s what is stolen most. “In any case, it turns out that Hondas remain the most stolen cars in America because they’re still worth something even if they were built before 1997. Looked at a certain way, that’s a badge of pride.”

What do you think? Is this something Honda and you as a Honda owner are proud of or is it concerning?

Honda Accord and CR-V are America’s Most Popular Car and SUV with Retail Car Buyers in First Half of 2014; and Honda CR-V Captures the Title of Best-Selling SUV of the Past Decade

  • Retail car buyers choose Accord more than any other car in America1
  • CR-V builds on ten years as the most popular, best-selling SUV in America2
  • Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey each post segment-leading retail results at the halfway mark of 20141

With the Accord and CR-V attracting retail customers in record numbers in the first half of 2014, Honda is again leading the industry with the most popular car and SUV in America, according to a Honda analysis of new-vehicle retail registration data from IHS Automotive. Based on Honda forecasts, the Accord and CR-V are on track to repeat their 2013 full-year results as top picks with U.S. retail car and SUV buyers, while CR-V continues to hold the title as the best-selling SUV in America for more than a decade.

Accord is once again the most popular car in America, with industry-leading sales to individual U.S. car buyers for the first half of 2014, while CR-V is both the retail and outright best-selling SUV based on retail registrations through June 2014, a position it’s held for seven of the past 10 years, culminating in the highest sales of any SUV in America during the past decade. Joining the Accord and CR-V as retail leaders in their segments for the first half of 2014 are the Honda Civic and Odyssey minivan.

Moreover, each of Honda’s four segment-leading models is on target to repeat its retail leadership performance from 2013, despite the fact that Honda has the lowest overall incentive spending among the top seven automakers. Three of the four models – Accord, Civic and CR-V – are each on track to earn sales in excess of 300,000 units for the second consecutive year, with fleet sales in the low single digits, as Honda targets all-time record sales in 2014.

“More individual customers put a new Honda Accord in their driveway in the first half of this year than any other new car in America, and SUV buyers continue to choose CR-V more than any other SUV in America,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “While competitors rely on deep-discounts and sales to corporate and rental fleets, Honda continues to achieve steady and sustainable growth based on the quality and value of our products in the hands of individual customers.”

Honda brand highlights for the first half of 2014 include:

  • Excluding full-size pickups, the Accord, Civic and CR-V continue to hold three of the top five slots – first, third and fourth, respectively – in retail registrations among individual car buyers in the first half of 2014.
  • The Accord, with retail registrations totaling 181,939 units through June, has strengthened its lead over its nearest competitor in the past three months, compared to the first three months of 2014.
  • Retail registrations accounted for 98.2 percent3 of all Accord registrations for the period, according to Honda analysis of IHS Automotive new-vehicle registration data.
  • Civic retail registrations of 160,293 units led all compact cars, increasing its lead over the closest segment competitor, which is now more than 26,000 units, compared to cumulative totals in the first quarter of 2014.
  • CR-V is America’s outright best-selling SUV of this year, and of the past decade. On a retail basis, CR-V registrations rose 6.6 percent to 153,968 units compared to the first half of last year, giving CR-V a more than 27,000-unit lead over the #2 selling vehicle in the segment so far in 2014.
  • Odyssey retail registrations of 62,096 units continue to make it the top choice among retail minivan customers –at 32 percent retail segment share. As a result, Odyssey sales have comprised nearly 1 of every 3 minivans purchased by individual buyers in America in 2014.

Included on Odyssey EX, EX-L and Touring models, the Honda LaneWatch™ display provides an expanded rear view of the passenger side roadway. The system uses a camera mounted on the bottom of the passenger door mirror, which when activated by the right turn signal or the signal-stalk LaneWatch™ button, displays a live, 80-degree view of the passenger-side roadway, compared to 18- to 22-degrees typical of a standard door mirror.

A rearview camera is standard on all Odyssey models. Odyssey LX, EX and EX-L models feature a single-angle “Normal View” display, while EX-L Navi, Touring and Touring Elite models have a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with wide, normal and top-down views – all with improved optical quality. All rearview camera systems feature guidelines.

HondaVAC™
The Odyssey Touring Elite features the first minivan in-vehicle vacuum cleaner system, HondaVac™ which is designed to help families keep the minivan interior neat and clean. Engineered for dry use, the HondaVAC™ operates on the vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system, and its performance easily surpasses that of a handheld rechargeable vacuums.

Integrated in the rear cargo area of the vehicle, the HondaVAC™ includes an extendable hose that can reach every interior corner of the vehicle. Two separate head attachments expand versatility, while a removable debris canister and replaceable filter bag makes maintaining the vacuum easy. To protect the vehicle battery’s state of charge, the HondaVAC™ runs up to eight minutes when the vehicle’s ignition is in Accessory mode – or continuously if the engine is running.

Audio, Connectivity & Rear Entertainment
Odyssey EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models have intuitive touch panel controls that reduce button clutter on the center stack. An upper 8-inch display and a lower 7-inch display provide a simpler overall interface improving usability of multiple features at one time (i.e. phone and audio. navigation and audio, etc.).

HandsFreeLink® is included on all models, and Bluetooth® audio streaming, SMS and email functions are available with compatible smartphones. Additional features include a phonebook, call history, speed dial and contact picture. Odyssey EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite include HondaLink™ featuring Aha™ which offers content from hundreds of channels through a tethered compatible smartphone.

The Rear Entertainment System (RES) on the EX-L RES, Touring and Touring Elite models features an intuitive control layout and high screen quality. This system features ideal placement of the DVD player and intuitive operation for the rear audio controls. Screen resolution is VGA on EX-L RES and Touring models, and the Touring Elite’s higher grade ultra-widescreen offers increased resolution.

Safety Equipment & Performance
The Odyssey utilizes the next-generation of Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure and makes extensive use of high-strength steel in the A-, B- and C-pillars, roof rails, floor rails, front body area, and front subframe. This results in a very strong front door opening with less chance of deformation in a frontal collision.

Advanced driver-assistive technologies available on the Odyssey include Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Using the Odyssey’s front camera module, FCW warns of a possible collision with a vehicle detected in front, while LDW notifies the driver of departures from detected lanes5. The two systems are packaged together on Odyssey EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite models, and provide visual and audible warnings.

North American Development and Manufacturing
The Odyssey was designed in Los Angeles, engineered at Honda R&D America’s in Ohio and is manufactured6 by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama.

Under the new digital marketing structure, RPA will continue to be responsible for all consumer-facing content related to traditional and digital advertising along with social media support as the creative agency for the Honda brand. Mullen, appointed the agency of record for Acura in April 2013, will continue to be responsible for all consumer-facing content related to traditional and digital advertising as the creative agency for the Acura brand.

Razorfish will work together with both creative agencies to optimize the brand and consumer-facing websites while maintaining the independent brand characteristics of each site. Additionally, Razorfish will be responsible for both Honda and Acura owner websites and social media support for Acura.

American Honda Reports June 2014 Sales-Increases All-Around!

  • Honda Civic and Accord post sales of more than 32,000 each in June for increases of 8.7 and 2.1 percent respectively
  • Honda CR-V posts best-ever 6-month sales performance with a gain of 6.1 percent YTD
  • Total Acura truck sales were up 6.1 percent in June
  • Acura MDX claims best-ever 6-month sales performance with an increase of 68.4 percent

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported June 2014 Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 129,023 units. The Honda division posted sales of 117,817 units in June while Acura sold 11,206 units in the same period. Year-to-date American Honda sales reached 739,436 units.

Honda
Honda’s core models—Accord, Civic and CR-V—continue to set the retail pace through the first half of 2014, with the Civic up 8.7 percent and Accord increasing 2.1 percent in June. However, retail consumers appeared to take a breath last month coupled with an unusually short number of selling days, the shortest June in five years.

  • Bucking a recent market shift toward SUVs, Civic is up 8.7 percent in June and 5.3 percent for the first six months of 2014—its best such period in a decade
  • Accord sales rise 2.1 percent in June
  • CR-V, the industry’s most popular SUV, posted a year-to-date gain of 6.1 percent for its best-ever 6-month sales performance
  • Despite low inventory as supply ramps up, the all-new 2015 Fit is driving new traffic at Honda dealerships

“Despite an easing of the pace in June, the larger sales trend throughout the industry remains robust,” said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. “Our core products remain strong and though we’re still filling its supply pipeline, the new 2015 Fit is selling very well and we expect it to add yet another strong pillar to Honda sales in the near future.”

Acura
Overall Acura sales continue to reflect the decreasing supply of TL and TSX models as the company prepares for launch of the 2015 TLX line of luxury performance sedans later this summer. With an unprecedented first half of the year, MDX and RDX continue to sell at a near record pace, pushing Acura truck sales up 6.1 percent for the month.

  • Acura truck sales rise 6.1 percent in June
  • MDX June sales rose 27.7 percent on sales of 4,890 units
  • Posting its best-ever six-month sales performance, the Acura MDX led the division with sales of 30,644 units, an increase 68.4 percent over last year

“The MDX and RDX had a stellar first half of the year, certainly a good indicator that the Acura brand is moving in a strong direction,” said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. “While we expected the reduced supply of sedans to impact sales this summer, the upcoming launch of the all-new 2015 TLX lineup heralds a new era for the Acura brand.”
