AAA Warns Against Dashboard Technology

With an announcement of what many may have already known, the triple-A auto club warned of a “public safety crisis” from voice command technology that allows drivers text and send emails.

According this article, “The head of Triple-A’s Foundation for Traffic Safety says when people are distracted by another task, they can develop what researchers call “inattention blindness.” They look straight ahead, but fail to see what’s in front of them — like red lights and pedestrians.

There are about 9 million cars and trucks on the road with infotainment systems, and Triple-A says that’s expected to jump to about 62 million vehicles by 2018. Officials with the auto group say they want to limit the voice-driven technologies to “core driving tasks” — instead of activities like posting Facebook messages and ordering pizza.”

I don’t know about you, but the fact that talking your email isn’t any safer than holding a phone to your ear is not news. What do you think? Do you think dashboard technology makes your driving safer or are you distracted more?

Toyota Recalls 240,000 Prius, Lexus Hybrid Vehicles

Toyota announced that it is recalling 242,000 Prius and hybrid Lexus vehicles due to problems with the braking system.

According to this article, 233,000 Toyota Prius vehicles made between March and October of 2009 and 9,000 Lexus HS250 models made between June and October of 2009. Only Lexus vehicles sold in Japan have been affected.

All vehicles should be taken in to be inspected.

Honda Odyssey to Climb Pike’s Peak

You have never seen a tricked out minivan like this heavily-modified Honda Odyssey with 535 horsepower that is headed to the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb to take place on June 30 in Colorado.

According to this article, “The race-bound minivan is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that uses a large Garrett turbocharger to churn out 535 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque, a considerable bump over the regular-production Odyssey’s 248 ponies and 250 lb-ft. of twist.  The mill is linked to a six-speed transmission and an Acura-sourced limited-slip differential, while Brembo brakes hidden behind 19-inch BBS alloy wheels make sure the van can stop as well as it goes.”

Whoa. Now that is a minivan that I could probably convince my husband to drive. Even if the built-in vacuum has been replaced with a roll cage and the 16 inch television with a five-point harness.

Actually, that’d be even more reason for him to want to drive it.

“[Pikes Peak] is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Pagenaud. “I’ve done a little bit of rallying in France, and I used to watch highlights of the Pikes Peak race on television as a kid. Our entry will be unique, to say the least! A Honda Odyssey with power similar to an IndyCar will raise some eyebrows for sure!

New Tailgate Locks Available for Honda Ridgeline

2013 Honda Ridgeline

Top tailgate security manufacturer, Pop & Lock, LLC, has created a lock for the Honda Ridgeline for the 2005 to most current model of the truck.

According to this article, “Designed to fit the current platform (2005 & Up), these add-on components will provide a secure locking option to the factory tailgate.  Both the manual (PL6100) and power (PL8600) kits can be purchased separately or together (PL8661) as a combination smart lock.

“The advantage of having the smart lock combination is you have the convenience of using your OEM key fob to lock the tailgate but can override the power lock with a key should your battery fail”, says Jeff Pierquet, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for VSI, LLC, the parent company of Pop & Lock.”

If you are like any of the truck owners I know, then I know you want to keep the stuff in the back of your truck secure. I think it’s awesome that there is now an increased security measure for Honda Ridgeline owners.

For additional information regarding Pop & Lock, please contact Jeff Pierquet at (800)-342-5911 or jeff@popnlock.net.

Honda Civic Si Transformed Into a Race Car: Video

We were intrigued by this short video that transforms your regular 2012 Honda Civic Si into a race car on the biggest stage. Because of the length of the video, I thought it would be a relatively easy process.

Well, it’s not exactly easy.

But it isvery interesting. And I’m not even a take-the-car-apart-and-put-it-back-together kind of gal.

If you want to see how a regular Honda Civic Si goes from normal commuter car to racing machine, check out this short documentary. It’s pretty cool.

Three Video Reviews of 2013 Honda Civic

We love video reviews. Why? Because it’s more fun to watch a review than read it and it’s really helpful to see what the reviewer is talking about as the video shows us. So, we were tickled when we found this article with three different reviews of the 2013 Honda Civic.

The consensus? The 2013 Honda Civic is even better than the 2012 Honda Civic, which was one of the best-selling cars of 2011. You owe it yourself to check out the “fun to drive” 2013 Honda Civic if you need a compact car or love the Civic.

“The 2013 Honda Civic is one of the most popular cars we have,” said Keith Hofkamp of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “It’s compact, great gas mileage, drives really responsively and is fun!”

Stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda in Bellingham, or Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee to take the 2013 Honda Civic for a test drive and find out why the 2013 Honda Civic is the best one yet!

Honda Accord Hybrid Gets Better Gas Mileage Than Toyota Camry Hybrid

The much-anticipated 2013 Honda Accord Hybrid will go on sale in June in Japan and gets much better gas mileage than the Toyota Camry Hybrid. We have read reports that say the Honda Accord Hybrid will arrive in the U.S. late this year.

According to this article, the 2013 Honda Accord Hybrid “has a fuel-efficiency rating of 30 kilometers a liter under the country’s JC08 testing standards, Tokyo-based Honda said in a statement today. The Camry hybrid travels 23.4 kilometers a liter, according to Toyota, while Nissan Motor Co. says its Teana, which runs on gasoline, goes 11.4 kilometers. ”

Ok, so we don’t measure our gasoline in liters, but it doesn’t take a genius to realize that 30 miles/liter is a significant improvement on 23.4 miles/liter.

The latest model’s fuel efficiency is “extraordinary,” Koichi Sugimoto, a Tokyo-based auto analyst at BNP Paribas SA with a buy rating on Honda, said by phone. “The new hybrid technology will definitely be a big strength for Honda.”

The 2013 Honda Accord is one of the best-selling and most popular sedans in the United States and we cannot wait to see the Accord Hybrid in action. We are very interested to find out how it performs and drives. And you can bet that you’ll be able to stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda and Apple Valley Honda to take one for a test drive!

Honda Fit EV Price Drop, Unlimited Miles on Lease

The Honda Fit EV (electric vehicle) is now more affordable! You can now lease the Honda Fit EV for $259 per month, which dropped from $389!

AND, whereas leasers were limited to 12,000 miles, they can drive as many miles as their hearts desire.

Already lease a Honda Fit EV? Honda is taking the high road and lowering those leaser’s monthly payments by $130 to meet the new monthly payments! How refreshing is that?! This makes the Honda Fit EV even more appealing and, according to this article, “Considering the lease also includes collision insurance, which probably save owners around $50/month on average, as well as includes a 240 volt EV home charging station, the lease offer is now the most attractive in the industry in our opinion.”

Here are the specs of the Honda Fit EV:

  • 82 Miles Range (EPA Scale)
  • 118 MPGe Rating (highest of all EVs currently on the market)
  • 92 kilowatt (123 hp) coaxial electric motor generating 189 ft-lb of torque (of which we drag raced a Volt with and handily beat)
  • $389/month (36 month) lease
  • 20 kWh battery
  • 6.6 kW charging, which means near full charges in about 3 hours
  • and ECO mode setting that should never be selected by anyone as it retards the driving to sub-human levels
  • theoretical room for 5 passengers
  • good size boot with a 60/40 split

So what do you think? Is the price drop and lifted mileage restriction enough for you to venture out to buy a Honda Fit EV (if you live in one of the few areas it is sold)?

Honda Deveops Walking Assist Exoskeleton

Honda has been working on a walking assist exoskeleton for the past 14 years and has recently leased 100 of their exoskeletons to hospitals in Japan to “evaluate their usefulness in the real world.”

What is a “walking assist exoskeleton”?

According to this interesting article, it is a device that will help individuals with a walking disability regain mobility and the ability to walk. Check out the article for some amazing pictures.

It’s true, Apple Valley Honda, Northwest Honda, and Sims Honda will probably not sell the walking assist exoskeleton, but we thought this was an incredible story of Honda’s ingenuity, innovation, and dedication to technology bettering the lives of all people. It is truly amazing to consider the implications the Honda walking assist exoskeleton could have on the life of an individual who has been injured or struck by illness.

What do you think of Honda’s walking assist exoskeleton? Do you know anyone who could benefit from technology like it?

Skagit River Bridge Collapse Close to Home for Honda Dealerships

Here at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington, we got an up close and personal look at the Skagit River bridge collapse that took down both directions of I-5 just south Sims Honda in Burlington.

The sound of the failing metal of the bridge could be heard by many in the area working late that Thursday evening.

The affects of this major economic lifeline will be felt by many businesses in Skagit and Whatcom counties, including Sims Honda and Northwest Honda.

“Many business are concerned,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “Traffic has been really horrible on and off around here since it happened. And for good reason. This stretch of freeway to Canada is the fourth busiest in the nation. And, we’re concerned that locals aren’t going to want to venture out as much because of the traffic. It’s still early and only time will tell, but, hopefully, we can get the temporary bridge over the river soon and get things back to normal.”

At Northwest Honda in Bellingham there is a real concern that Canadian consumers may not want to come south of the border because of the headaches.

“The bridge collapse is about 30 minutes south of Bellingham, but many Canadians stop by on their way to shop other places in Mount Vernon, Marysville, and Seattle,” Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda said. “Some might think it’s too big of a hassle, but we want to them to know that we’re open for business and it should be smooth sailing to get to and from Northwest Honda from Canada.”

We are here to tell you that Sims Honda and Northwest Honda are open for business and we are encouraging local consumers and consumers around the state to come by. A temporary bridge is set to be in place over the river by the middle of June and traffic flows should go back to normal. Until that time, there are a couple alternate routes to get to Sims Honda that are really not too long or complicated, so don’t be intimidated by reports you hear on the news!

If you have questions about our business or the best ways to get to Sims Honda or Northwest Honda, please do not hesitate to call us. We’ll be here.
