I didn’t even know there was a Montreal Auto Show and, apparently, that’s because it’s the same week as the Detroit Auto Show (the Montreal Auto Show should get a new events planner). So it’s no surprise that those in Montreal don’t expect many surprises because most of the concepts get unwrapped south of the border.
Well, Honda gave the Montreal a big surprise.
Honda unveiled its new concept car named the GEAR, sub-compact car built for Gen Y lifestyles: “simple and utilitarian, but also customizable, connected and full of personality.”
Dave Marek, Design Director at Honda R&D Americas explained: “Subcompact cars are usually either utilitarian, but uninspiring or they’re fun, zippy cars that are impractical and too expensive for the Gen-Y buyer. GEAR Concept tears down those walls – it’s practical but fun, customizable, connected and affordable. Everything that young, discerning urban buyers would want in a car.”
While cars that actually go into production tend to look a bit different than the concept car, we are excited to see what the Honda GEAR will look like on the outside and inside and what the engine specs will be.

Honda has teased us with peek-a-boo pictures of its Urban SUV Concept and, while we liked what we saw, we were really excited to see this short video by CNET showcasing the sleek looking compact SUV at the Detroit Auto Show recently.

As the video takes us through an abbreviated two minute tour of this silver bullet with LED lights, we were pleased to see the versatility of the inside of the vehicle. The Urban SUV will regularly be able to seat five, but the back seats fold down flat to provide a lot of storage space (perfect for transporting all those things that urbanites transport). In fact, the commentator drew a very fair comparison of the Urban SUV to the popular Honda Fit (“on steroids”) that has the same kind of versatility. However, the Urban SUV is quite bit taller than the Honda Fit, so you’ll be able to get even more urban stuff in there.
I was surprised to hear that Honda’s Urban SUV is nine inches shorter than the it’s older sibling in the compact SUV family, the Honda CR-V. I surely doesn’t look nine inches shorter and with the ability to seat five AND those fold-down seats, we’re betting it doesn’t feel nine inches shorter.
Expect to see Hondas Urban SUV in markets in 2014!
That title may be a little misleading. I mean, you can’t really ‘vs’ when you’re on the same team and one model is the new and improved version of the previous car, but this video is a very interesting and honest head-to-head comparison of the 2012 Honda Civic and 2013 Honda Civic.
If you’ve been following Honda news at all, you know that Honda came out with the 2012 Honda Civic that met some critics. However, as pointed out in the video, it was still the best-selling car in America. But CNN.com thinks that’s an “Awful lot of people who should’ve waited” for the 2013 Honda Civic.
And while the 2012 Honda Civic was still wildly successful with consumer, Honda believe there’s always room for improvement and, so, it took the Civic back to the drawing board and made some significant improvements. I highly recommend watching the video, but in case you don’t have 2-3 minutes, here are the highlights:
- The 2013 Civic looks better on the outside with the new grill and lines
- The 2013 Civic looks and feels better on the inside, even though it has the same design as the 2012;Honda upgraded the internal materials making it feel nicer
- The steering and suspension feel better in the 2013 Civic
- And, while the engines are the same (meaning the same, great gas mileage), the 2013 Civic is quieter and doesn’t seem as gruff.
These may not seem like big issues, but Honda took the criticism to heart and came out with a new and improved 2013 Honda Civic. This created an opportunity for buyers to purchase the improved 2013 Civic or get a great deal on the now “out-dated” 2012 Civic (again, the best-selling car of last year).

Honda again shows that it’s leading the pack of environmentally-friendly vehicles and meeting stringent government rules regarding emissions. The Honda Accord Plug-In was the first vehicle to meet California’s emissions standards, the strictest in the nation.
“Once again, Honda is the first to comply with ARB’s most stringent standard,” says Tom Cackette, ARB’s Deputy Executive Office and head of the mobile source program. “Honda has demonstrated that a dedicated commitment to the environment and advanced engineering at every level of the company can deliver the cleanest cars well ahead of schedule.”
According to this article, the Honda Accord Plug-In “reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an impressive 50% from current required levels, bringing it to levels not mandated until 2025. As a result of the advanced technology in its design, the full-size sedan achieves the equivalent of 124 miles per gallon (mpg) city / 105 mpg highway in hybrid mode, and 47 mpg city / 46 mpg highway in standard (gas only) mode.”
So according to the above information, Honda is 12 years ahead of its time. Talk about over-achieving.
Honda continually proves why it has been the “Greenest Automaker” for the past several years with these impressive emission and miles-per-gallon numbers.
“Honda has always been a leader in creating environmentally-friendly vehicles,” said Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham. “I am proud to be a part of a company that creates vehicles that are the first to meet environmental standards. Honda takes initiative and doesn’t wait until it is forced to make more responsible cars. Even though the Accord Plug-In isn’t available in the Northwest yet, Honda has a long history of paving the way with cars that have low emissions and great gas mileage so drivers are buying and using less gas.”
The article points out:
- The 1996 Honda Civic was the first vehicle to be certified as a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV)
- The 1998 Honda Accord was the first vehicle certified as the first Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV)
- The 2000 Honda Accord was the first vehicle certified as the first Super-Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV)
- The 2001 Civic GX natural gas vehicle was the first certified Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT PZEV)
- The 2003 Civic Hybrid was the first certified Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission hybrid Vehicle (AT PZEV).

The highlights including comparisons in price (comparable), performance (they both perform well) and image. In another example of how ‘American’ Honda is, Honda recently announced it will build the hybrid version of the extremely popular 2013 Honda Accord at its Marysville, Ohio plant. This means Honda will be investing $23 million and create 50 new jobs.
While 50 jobs added onto the already 4,400 jobs at that plant, may not seem like much, 50 good paying jobs and an investment of $23 million to extend the production line (to add the hybrid technology to the Accord), will make a big difference to that community and the trickle down effect is very real.
According to this article, “[The 2013 Honda Accord hybrid] will be the first hybrid model produced by Honda in Ohio and only the third made in North America for the Honda and luxury Acura lines.”
The 2013 Honda Accord gas-and-electric hybrid is expected to get 47 miles per gallon. That seems really good until you compare to the gas mileage of the Accord plug-in hybrid that gets 115 miles per gallon (only being sold in New York and California currently).
While the mileage of these Honda vehicles is impressive, we think what is most impressive about this news is how it illustrates Honda’s dedication to building vehicles for Americans in America.
Hondas Beat Competition in All 3 Head-to-Head Shootouts on Cars.com
We love Hondas, so it’s no wonder that we write about how much better Hondas are than other cars. But, in an effort to show that it’s not just us who love Hondas, here’s an AWESOME article about how Honda vehicles beat out all other vehicles in three different face-offs: the $16,000 Subcompact shootout (2012 Honda Fit won), the $25,000 Compact SUV shootout (the 2012 Honda CR-V won), and the $26,000 Midsize Sedan shootout (the 2013 Honda Accord won).
Not only did Honda win, but they won each shootout by an average of 26 points. We can’t make this stuff up.
The article provides a great breakdown for the pros and cons of each car tested in each shootout, including the comments of each judge and the real-life test-family. If you are considering by a vehicle in any of these three categories, I HIGHLY recommend you read the article relevant to you because they do a great job with specifics.
Here’s what you need to know from the $16,000 Subcompact shootout:
- “The verdict: ”The Fit is a triumph of cargo volume, versatility and execution,” Wiesenfelder said, “and its powertrain is a winner. From the first moment, the Fit begged to be driven hard.” Enough said.”
- All the judges and the test-family raved about the overall roominess of the vehicle that looks much smaller on the outside then it feels on the inside. In fact, the second row seats fold UP so you can still have a flat loading space.
- It’s fun to drive. More than any of the other cars tested, the Honda Fit handled magnificently on corners, hills, bumps, etc. No need to worry about driving a puny, wimpy
car. Drive one that is fun to drive!
- It got the second best gas mileage with EPA tested 28/35 city/highway mpg. The judges got an actual gas mileage of 33.4 mpg.

Honda’s Lineup for Tokyo Auto Show
Honda revealed its lineup for the Tokyo Auto Salon will include a lot of speed, a lot of presentation, and, dare we say, a lot of pizzazz (including a vehicle covered in rhinestones. Too bad this article doesn’t include pictures of that one).
Honda will display another vehicle in its N-One series, the Modulo Style, which looks boxy, but fun to drive in the cities where space and parking are tight. The racing models Honda has included seem to reference its sporty past and cutting edge future.

The Honda CR-V has been one of the most, if not the most, popular small SUVs on the road. With each new version, it has only gotten better and, so, my interest was piqued when I saw this article with a ‘study’ of the new CR-V.
And I liked what I saw (photo is from Carscoop.com).
From Carscoop.com: “Honda’s official tuning arm created a new styling package for the latest generation CR-V comprising a front grille with a protruding chrome bar, a newly designed front bumper, chrome fender trims, side skirts, a new rear bumper with stacked exhaust outlets and a roof spoiler.”
I love the look of the new Honda CR-V that will officially debut in Japan in January. It looks…less soccer mom (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and more…”move over, I’ve got places to be.” I think that’s a subtle but bold distinction.
From this one photo, it does seem to have more of a minivan shape, but the front grill and shaping do not scream “I’ve got 3 kids in here spilling their milkshakes and throwing their fries! Would you please move over because I’m late to piano lessons!” I think it says, “I’m fierce and I’ll tailgate you until you move over to the right lane where you belong, you passive aggressive Prius!” Ok, maybe that got a little too personal (but really, are drivers of Priuses the most passive aggressive left-lane drivers ever or is it me?).
What does the new Honda CR-V look say to you?
This article/list was an interesting compilation of cars, trucks, bikes and robots that make up what the writer said are the top ten things at the Honda Collection Hall in Japan. Honestly, a lot of these vehicles were vehicles I had never heard of, but it was interesting to read where they had a place in cultural history, in racing history, and in Honda’s history.
