2013 Honda Civic Keeps Great Gas Mileage

The 2013 Honda Civic is improved in a couple areas, namely the upgrade of interior materials, but one thing that hasn’t changed from previous models is its industry-leading gas mileage. This article goes into detail, but here’s what you need to know if you care about getting a new car with incredible fuel efficiency:

  • The 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid gets a combined 44 mpg
  • The 2013 Honda Civic with a 1.8 liter HF, five-speed automatic gets 33 mpg (29 city/41 highway)
  • The 2013 Honda Civic with a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine automatic (the base Civic) gets 31 mpg combined (28 city/19 highway). If you want a manual, you get 28 mpg combined (28 city/36 highway)
  • The Honda Civic Natural Gas (sold in select markets) uses natural gas instead of traditional gasoline. It gets 31 mpg combined (27 city/38 highway).
  • The Honda Civic Si with a 2.4 cylinder four-cylinder engine gets 25 mpg combined (22 mpg/31 highway)

As you can see, if gas mileage is a high priority for you, then the Honda Civic is still the car for you. However, 2013 Honda Civic also has improved performance.

According to the article, “As for the driving experience, the 2013 Civic’s modest suspension changes produce nimbler handling without creating an overly-harsh ride. The cabin is a quieter place to spend time, too, thanks to thicker glass and added soundproofing, while the car’s softer dash also seems to help with interior acoustics. Front seats are quite good, especially in light of the car’s price positioning…”

“The 2013 Honda Civic is a great car for commuters, folks who do a lot of road trips, older individuals who don’t need to haul kids around and need an economic vehicle,” said Tony Carter, general manager of Northwest Honda in Bellingham. “The Honda Civic has a record of delivering fantastic gas mileage and the 2013 Honda Civic is no different. With the upgraded materials and performance, the redesign was very successful. Everyone should check out the 2013 Honda Civic.”

2013 Honda Accord’s Technology Makes it a “Contender”

The performance, design, and overall quality of the 2013 Honda Accord has been well-documented by critics and consumers alike, but this reviewer sums up much of the success of the 2013 Honda Accord in one word: technology. Here’s what he had to say about some of his favorite technological features of the 2013 Honda Accord:

LaneWatch: “Instead of a simple blind spot warning light in the right exterior mirrror, Honda has a camera that SHOWS you what’s behind there. The camera displays its image on the “navi” screen, so as soon as you turn on your right turn signal, a video shows the road behind you on the right fading away. Of course, if there’s something in that vicinity, you’ll see that, too…The left outside rearview mirror has a split mirror with a more convex surface on the outer edge, again acting like a blind spot monitor. At first, I thought the convexity wasn’t enough, but it proved to be just right.”

Center console cameras: “There are two screens in the center of the dash; one for the navigation system (and back-up camera and blind spot monitor) and one for audio. If you aren’t using the top screen, it becomes a second audio screen.”

Green driving: “The best aid to green driving, however, is the speedometer surround. In normal mode, it is white, but when you start driving more economically, it turns green. Like many of these features, it almost becomes a game trying to keep it green.”

We agree that the technology included standard in all trims of the 2013 Honda Accord is what sets it apart from all other midsize sedans. That’s right, every trim comes with LaneWatch technology and a backup camera because Honda thinks that every driver should have technology to be safer.

Stop by Northwest Honda, Sims Honda, or Apple Valley Honda today to see for yourself all the technology that the 2013 Honda Accord has to offer you!

2013 Honda Pilot Fit for Blizzard Conditions

According to the writer of this article, all the news of the “historic” blizzards in the Midwest make him want to be there in those storms, but only if he’s in the 2013 Honda Pilot.

While the concept of this article is rather comical (who really wants to be in a blizzard, even if they are in a 2013 Honda Pilot?), the information and reasoning is sound. With the Honda Pilot’s truck-like build, space, comfort features, and safety specs, the 2013 Honda Pilot could be on of the best vehicles to be in if you did happen to get caught in a winter storm.

Here’s why this writer thinks the 2013 Honda Pilot should be your vehicle of choice in a blizzard:

  • The 9-inch DVD player that drops down between the first and second row to keep the kids entertained while you crawl (or don’t move at all) on the frozen highway.
  • Room for 8 people..or 8 people’s-worth of luggage space. Could come in handy for those “He’s touching me!” moments.
  • Room for all your books, laptops, drinks, etc. (because you prepared just in case you got stuck in the blizzard; need to have stuff for entertainment and Pilot has plenty of places to put them)
  • Drives better than a truck, but you still get that same safety and security (invaluable in a blizzard)

“We can get lots of snow here in Wenatchee,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “The 2013 Honda Pilot is a big, safe vehicle that I think makes people feel safe driving it in winter weather and over the Cascade passes. It has the strength of a truck, but the comfort and space of a great SUV. It’s really the best of both worlds.”

Really, the 2013 Honda Pilot is great even if you do not get stuck in blizzards frequently, but if you live in place with harsh winters or travel frequently over mountain passes, then maybe you should take a look at the 2013 Honda Pilot. Stop by Apple Valley Honda, Sims Honda, or Northwest Honda to take a 2013 Honda Pilot for a test drive today!

Honda Moves 50 Jobs, Executive to Ohio

Honda is restructuring its North American management and moving 50 salaried positions from its headquarters in Torrance, Calif. to its manufacturing hub in Marysville, Ohio.

According to this article, “Tetsuo Iwamura, who is head of Honda’s North American sales office in California, will move to Ohio where he will oversee all of the company’s operations, Honda said this morning. He is also being promoted to chief operating officer for Honda’s auto operations around the world. He is already an executive vice president and member of the board that runs the company.”

Honda has repeatedly said that the North American market is increasingly important to its global success and so we think it’s a smart move to shift Iwamura and these other jobs to Ohio where will help Honda be even more successful in North America.

“These organizational changes will improve the speed of decision-making and the efficiency of our business operations,” Iwamura said in a statement. “Our global customers desire new, exciting and affordable automobile, motorcycle and power equipment products, and these changes will enhance our ability to quickly bring our customers’ dreams to the market.”

Also according to the article, “Iwamura already serves as president of Honda North America Inc. The difference is that this title and role will now have a broader scope, as opposed to focusing mostly on sales. He will spend much of his time traveling, but will be based in Marysville.”

We think it’s smart to concentrate many of Honda’s North American decision-makers into one place to expedite processes, increase creativity and, ultimately, make North America the king-maker for Honda.

Honda Develops Technology to Reduce Door Weight by 17 Percent

Honda is again paving the way to create better technology and better cars in the future. Strike that. Honda is paving the way to create better cars starting in March.

Honda engineers developed a way to create a steel-aluminum door panel, including how to join the two materials, technology to prevent corrosion, and technology to control thermal deformation. Traditionally, door panels are made of strictly steel; by using aluminum for part of the door, Honda reduced the door weight by 17 percent.

The technology will be on the Acura RLX starting in March.

Naturally, any amount the car weight is decreased will help with Honda’s industry-leading gas mileage. And, no doubt, Honda engineers have managed to decrease the weight without compromising the integrity of the vehicle or safety of the passengers.

Here’s what it took to make this new technology work according to this article:

  • “Technology to join dissimilar materials: adoption of “3D Lock Seam” structure, where the steel panel and aluminum panel are layered and hemmed together twice (see figure 1).
  • Technology to prevent electrical corrosion: adoption of highly anti-corrosive steel for the inner panel and a new form that assures the complete filling of the gap with adhesive agent (see figure 2).
  • Technology to control thermal deformation: adoption of adhesive agent with low- elastic modulus and optimized position of the 3D Lock Seam.”

Leave it to Honda to innovate some of the latest and greatest technologies!

Solar City & Elon Musk Choose Honda Over Toyota to be Vehicle for Solar Power Discount

Buy a Honda (or Acura) and get $400 off solar power at your house? Sounds good to us!

In a first-of-its-kind incentive, Honda and SolarCity have teamed up to offer residents of 14 states, including Washington State, a $400 break on solar power if you purchase a Honda or Acura. It’s a unique idea and one backed up market research, according to this article. It seems like a solid marketing plan considering “(a) Honda and Acura sales in SolarCity’s 14-state area are pretty strong, and (b) Honda and Acura owners are more likely than other vehicle owners to be interested in solar power.”

Honda’s vice president for Environmental Business Development, Steven Center, references that second point fairly directly: “At Honda, we are always looking at ways to improve the lives of our customers while reducing our environmental footprint…. We believe Honda and Acura customers are going to be very interested in going solar once they find out that they can install solar at their home with little or no upfront cost, can lower their monthly utility bill, and can make a positive contribution to protecting the environment.”

As much as we think this solar power incentive is great, we think the most interesting part about this story is behind the scenes having to do with the fact that the SolarCity chairman is Elon Musk…as in Tesla Motors, Elon Musk. While Tesla and Honda may not be the biggest rivals or be direct competitors yet, Tesla does “a fairly significant alliance with one of Honda’s biggest rivals, Toyota.” In fact, Tesla bought its newest manufacturing plant from Toyota for next to nothing and Tesla is working on the battery system for the all new electric Toyota RAV4 (apparently, their goal is to build many electric vehicles together).

Considering all this, why wouldn’t Elon Musk and SolarCity create this car-buying, solar-powering incentives program with Toyota…instead of one of their biggest rivals, Honda? According to the article, no one really knows Musk’s reasons yet for choosing Honda over Toyota, but we are dying to know.

Is it because Musk wants to strategically get involved with several auto manufacturers for future endeavors? Is it because he doesn’t really like working with Toyota and wants to plant seeds with another company? (not that he’d ever admit it) Or, is it simply a business move and he expects more Hondas to sell and, therefore, create more business for SolarCity.

Why do you think Elon Musk chose Honda over Toyota?

2013 Honda Fit Wins Two “Best Car for the Money” Awards from U.S. News & World Report

The Honda Fit is one of Honda’s most popular vehicles, quickly gaining on the likes of the Civic and Accord. With two new awards from U.S. News & World Report, the 2013 Honda Fit will likely continue with its upward trend.

U.S. News & World Report awarded the 2013 Honda Fit as “Best Subcompact for the Money” and “Best Hatchback for the Money” beating out other popular models by Toyota, Subaru, and all other major manufacturers.

“The Fit brings truth to the concept that big things can come in small packages,” said Mike Accavitti , vice president of national marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With an amazingly roomy interior, snappy styling, great driving dynamics and industry-leading Honda quality, Fit proves that small cars can provide value well beyond their size.”

The gas mileage, space, and Honda dependability has made the Honda Fit not just popular with experts and critics, but also with the average buyer.

“Lots of people come to Sims Honda thinking they either want an Accord or a CR-V,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager of Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “But they end up driving away in a Honda Fit after they get in and realize it has a lot of space, gets awesome gas mileage and has a very versatile interior. It has almost 91 cubic feet of passenger space and 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats! And it comfortably seats five people…unless you want to fold down the seats flat to utilize that space.”

According to the press release, “…the exclusive 60/40 split rear Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. With its one-motion dive-down functionality, it can fold flat into the floor to provide a maximum 57.3 cu-ft. of rear cargo volume. Compared to any other vehicle in the subcompact class, the five-passenger Fit provides the lowest, flattest cargo floor and the most cargo volume. The Fit’s interior thus can easily be converted to tall-object mode or long-object mode based on the shape of the cargo.

Here are some of the other awards earned by the 2013 Honda Fit

  • A “Top Safety Pick” rating by the IIHS
  • A 2013 Residual Value Award from ALG
  • A 2013 Best Resale Value Award from KBB.com
  • Recognized as a “greener choice of 2013″ by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)
  • A seven-time Car and Driver magazine “10Best Cars” award winner

Stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda or Apple Valley Honda dealerships to check out the award-winning (many times over) 2013 Honda Fit. You may think you want an Accord or CR-V, but don’t walk off the lot until you’ve taken the 2013 Honda Fit for a test drive and visualized your family and your stuff in its spacious passenger and cargo space.

Honda Fit EV Available on East Coast

Until now the Honda Fit EV has frustratingly only been available at select dealerships in California and Oregon. Well, by the end of February, the Honda Fit EV will be hitting the East Coast (which is still frustrating for those us in the state of Washington, but “Yay!” for the East Coast).

The Honda Fit EV will be available to lease (still can’t purchase one) at select dealerships in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. While we are certainly happy for residents of the eastern seaboard, we are jealous its 118 mpg and EPA-rated 82 mile range is still not an option for us here in Washington.

The Honda Fit EV will be available to lease for $389 for 36 months as a part of Honda’s ‘real world feedback’ efforts before fully releasing it to the rest of us.

Honda Slow Jams its 2013 President’s Day Commercial

Usually President’s Day sales commercials are filled with all kinds of red, white and blue patriotism. And while there’s certainly nothing wrong with that, we were thrilled to see Honda’s commercial for its 2013 President’s Day sale.

No Americana clichés. No cartoons.

This commercial is all about the slow jam. Not just any slow jam; a slow jam with George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and a piper. Ok, it might sound a little awkward, but it’s really funny and a very refreshing President’s Day commercial.

Check out the commercial on YouTube HERE.
