Four Honda Vehicles Earn Recognition on ACEEE’s List of “Greenest” and “Greener” Vehicles of 2014

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire- — Four Honda vehicles have earned recognition from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for superior environmental performance, including three that ranked in the top ten among the ACEEE’s “greenest vehicles of 2013.” In the ACEEE’s annual “Green Book® Online” ranking of environmentally responsible vehicles, the Honda Civic Hybrid placed fifth overall and in the top three among gasoline-powered vehicles, while the Civic Natural Gas and the Insight placed ninth and tenth, respectively.

Moreover, the fuel-efficient Odyssey was the highest ranked minivan and was named as a “greener choices of 2014.” This is the 16th straight year that multiple Honda vehicles have been named to the top 12.

“Honda has embraced the challenge to bring to market more energy-efficient mobility solutions to reduce CO2 emissions,” said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “ACEEE’s recognition of Honda’s fuel-efficient models over the past 16 years, including a diverse lineup of alternative fuel vehicles, is recognition of the Honda engineers who continue to work towards our goal to leave ‘Blue Skies for our Children.’”

The ACEEE ranking system uses a singular measure that incorporates fuel economy and health-related pollution impacts plus global warming and upstream emissions. All vehicles are analyzed and given a “Green Score” which is used to rank each vehicle’s total environmental performance, including a list of the 12 “greenest” and 12 “meanest” vehicles along with a ranking of greenest vehicles by segment.

Honda’s Environmental Leadership
Honda has a long history of environmental innovation, including the retail introduction of America’s first hybrid (1999 Honda Insight), delivery of the first fuel-cell electric vehicle in the U.S. (2002 Honda FCX) and the first gasoline-powered vehicles in the hands of consumers to meet stricter emissions standards, including the 1996 Honda Civic, the first gasoline Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV); the 1998 Honda Accord, the first gasoline Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV); the 2000 Honda Accord, the first gasoline Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) in the hands of consumers; the 2001 Civic Natural Gas, the first vehicle to qualify as an Advanced Technology Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV); and, most recently, the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In, the first Super Ultra-Low Emissions 20 Vehicle (LEV 3/SULEV 20), now available for lease and sale in California and New York state.

Honda Leads the Pack with Six Top Safety Pick+ Ratings

If numbers don’t lie, then we can honestly say that Honda vehicles are the safest vehicles on the road. Honda leads all other automakers with six Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Honda Odyssey is the only minivan to be given this safety rating.

Two other models earned the second highest rating of Top Safety Pick.

There is a lot to be proud of here, so below is the complete press release from Honda:

  • Two models also named TOP SAFETY PICK, next highest rating
  • More challenging  IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ testing standards require vehicles to offer collision warning technology

A total of six Honda and Acura models, the most of any auto maker, received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) under its more challenging technology requirements in guidelines implemented for the 2014 model year.

“As the industry leader in TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings for 2013 and now 2014, it’s clear that our commitment to offer advanced safety technologies on mainstream products continues to pay dividends to Honda and Acura customers,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “Honda and Acura vehicles should be at the top of the shopping list for those who value safety ratings and the engineering prowess required to achieve them.”

Four 2014 Honda models were named a TOP SAFETY PICK+ including the Accord Sedan and Coupe; Civic Sedan; and Odyssey, which is the only minivan yet to earn this designation. The Civic Coupe was named a TOP SAFETY PICK. Additionally, two 2014 Acura models, the new MDX and the RLX each achieved TOP SAFETY PICK+ status with the TL earning a TOP SAFETY PICK rating.

The IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK rating recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover and small overlap front crashes based on performance in the Institute’s tests. Under this year’s more challenging requirements, the IIHS is using the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation to recognize vehicles that not only performed well in its crash tests but also are equipped with technologies that help prevent or mitigate front-to-rear collisions. Front collision prevention, which includes both warning systems and automatic braking, is intended to help inattentive drivers avoid rear-ending a stopped or slower-moving vehicle in front of them.

American Honda’s 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles offer a broad range of active and passive safety features along with available leading-edge safety and driver assistive technologies like the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system. FCW uses a camera or radar mounted in the upper portion of the windshield to detect a vehicle ahead. Audible and visuals warnings alert the driver when the system determines that a collision with a detected vehicle or object is likely. Intended as a warning system only, FCW will not automatically activate the brakes, and the driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and avoiding collisions.

Other available safety and driver-assistive technologies available on Honda and Acura vehicles include: Collision Mitigation Braking System; anti-lock brakes; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®); Lane Departure Warning (LDW), LaneWatch™ blind spot display; side curtain airbags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and a front-side airbags.

Honda Safety Leadership
Honda has a long history of leadership in the development and application of advanced technologies and designs to enhance the safety of all road users, including automobile occupants, motorcycle riders, and pedestrians. The company operates two of the world’s most sophisticated crash test facilities and is responsible for numerous pioneering efforts in the areas of crashworthiness, airbag technology, collision compatibility and pedestrian safety. This commitment to safety is rooted in Honda’s goal to be a company that society wants to exist, and it complements the company’s leadership in reducing vehicle emissions, improving fuel efficiency and advancing alternatives to gasoline.

Honda is the only Automaker on TheWeeklyDriver.com’s Top 10 List for 2013

As many other websites are doing, TheWeeklyDriver.com has released a list of its top ten cars for 2013. Honda is the only automaker that had two of its vehicles make the list.

Check out the article here.

The Honda to make their list was the new Honda Accord. Their review in brief? “Who would have thought a Honda Accord would be a luxury car? Think no more. It is.”

The next Honda on the list was the Honda Odyssey. What they had to say in brief: “All the stigma soccer moms and van pool types have against minivans is no longer relevant. The Honda Odyssey is a high-end sedan, really, masquerading as a large, aggressive, powerful people mover that easily seats seven.”

There are links from the article to entire review of each vehicle, but we think this a pretty good start.

“Both the Accord and the Odyssey have really broken the molds of their respective segments,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Really, the Accord has set a new standard for affordable sedans and the Odyssey has been called the “modern minivan,” so it’s really great that they both made this list.”

2014 Honda Odyssey is the Modern Minivan

Yes, we realize we may have to change the name of this blog to “The Blog about the 2014 Honda Odyssey and 2014 Honda Accord,” but we get our content from the internet, so whatever the internet is talking about is what we talk about.

And the internet is talking a LOT about the 2014 Honda Odyssey and it’s all good stuff.

We don’t like to be repetitive so we’ll start with the part of this review (from the Spokesman Review in Spokane) that literally made is LOL (ok, chuckle): “The Odyssey (from $29,655, including destination) seats up to eight in a cabin that’s easily reconfigured to accommodate an apocalypse-worthy Costco run.”

Because, really, we all know what a non-apocalyptic Costco run can look so it was fun to imagine an “apocalypse-worthy Costco run” and it’s good to know the 2014 Honda Odyssey can handle it.

For as much as is awesome about the 2014 Honda Odyssey, this one talked a lot about the superior handling of this modern minivan, perhaps because people don’t expect much from minivans. The 2014 Honda Odyssey is changing all that.

“Despite its large capacity, the Odyssey drives small. It’s responsive and easy to maneuver in traffic. On the road, it’s quiet and stable…Relative to crossovers, the Odyssey’s low center of gravity produces a stable, surefooted feel at highway speeds and through fast corners. Honda’s subtle, sure-handed approach to suspension and chassis dynamics give it a lively quality underhand. The ride is firm and controlled but compliant over rough surfaces. Steering is responsive and nicely weighted, with good on-center feel.”

And, of course, the 2014 Honda Odyssey comes with a plethora of technological options, including Lane Watch, back up cameras, Honda infotainment system, and (on the Touring model) the  HondaVac vacuum!

“The 2014 Honda Odyssey really brings the minivan to a whole new level,” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “If you are “scared” of minivans, come check out the 2014 Honda Odyssey. It’s the least minivan minivan you’ll find on the market and you’ll probably fall in love with its style and functionality.”

2014 Honda Odyssey is “Most Versatile Car Ever Made”?

There’s a lot to love about the 2014 Honda Odyssey: the space, the vacuum, the handling, the technology, and more.

One of the two dislikes listed by www.theweeklydriver.com? “It’s called a minivan, which could discourage buyers who think it’s actually a minivan.”

This family hauler is more like the Swiss army knife of vehicles because of all the things it does and you can get accomplished with it.

“What isn’t there to like about the 2014 Honda Odyssey?” said Keith Hofkamp, general manager at Sims Honda dealership in Burlington. “If you are looking for the best family vehicle, then you need to stop by and check out the 2014 Odyssey. Even if you’re a “No Minivan” kind of person, you may find yourself falling in love with the very non-minivan maneuverability, gas mileage, style, and technology. And the vacuum. Can’t forget about the Honda-vac in the back.”

When it comes to family vehicles, space and versatility of that space is king…which is why the 2014 Honda Odyssey reigns.

According to The Weekly Driver, “The Odyssey’s all-around spaciousness is impressive. There’s headroom and legroom aplenty and comfort without compromise. It’s an ideal cruising car for a weekend getaway for three couples without having to worry about a gas-guzzler’s limitations.”

They also had a long list of “likes” that we think you will also appreciate:

  • Quiet ride
  • Agile Maneuvering
  • Good acceleration for its class
  • Deep trunk
  • Large, clear navigation system and back-up camera screen.
  • Easy entrance, exit.
  • Strong overall vision.

Honda Starts Food Fight On Twitter

We love a good food fight, especially one that we don’t have to clean up.

However, Honda is making the point on Twitter that the new Odyssey COULD clean up a food fight with its HondaVac.

Honda tweeted out pictures of the HondaVac cleaning up after popular (and messy) snacks like Oreos, Cheetos, Taco Bell, and more with clever sayings. And food companies didn’t take it lying down. Read the complete article HERE to get a chuckle (or at least a smile).

No doubt there aren’t many foods that HondaVac in the Honda Odyssey can’t take care…and most definitely it will be challenged because we all know kids can make all sorts of messes in the back of vehicles. But we think Honda came out triumphant on Twitters, just like it will over all those crumbs!

Honda Odyssey is King of Minivans, Video Review

As this article points out, many people don’t think minivans are cool, so being the “undisputed king of the minivans” may be like being declared king of the geeks in high school.

Then again, maybe not. I mean, just check out this video review by KickingTires.com and you’ll see how COOL the Honda Odyssey really is.

Batdad Drives a Honda Odyssey

Did you know that when Batman isn’t fighting crime, he’s driving a Honda Odyssey and mildly terrorizing his children with nuggets of parental correction in his rough, Batman voice.

Oh, wait. Not Batman. Batdad, as seen on Vine.

“When I’m not fighting crime, I drive a Honda Odyssey. It gets better gas mileage,” said Batdad.

Ok, that’s about the only Honda-related statement that Batdad makes, BUT it’s the first one in this montage and he’s not getting paid to say it, so we think it means that much more.

Watch Batdads Honda Odyssey endorsement and some of his shenanigans HERE.

2014 Honda Odyssey Vacuum Really “Sucks”

It’s no secret. We adore the built-in vacuum in the 2014 Honda Odyssey.  We love the idea. We love the commercials. It’s just fabulous.

But does it really work.

According to Consumer Reports, it does.

We’re sure many people would expect a vacuum built into the vehicle itself not to work as well as a “real” vacuum, which is something Consumer Reports wanted to test.

What they found was that the vacuum in the 2014 Honda Odyssey “really cleans up.” Here’s what they said: “The bottom line. Honda’s built-in vacuum is a worthy addition to an impressive van.”

Stop by Sims Honda, Northwest Honda, or Apple Valley Honda today to find out why the 2014 Honda Odyssey is the best minivan on the market and test the Odyssey-worthy vacuum.
