Kelley Blue Book Names 2014 Honda Accord One of Best Family Vehicles

It’s true, when SUVs and smaller SUVs, some predicted the end of the family sedan. That prediction has proven not true and the 2014 Honda Accord even goes so far as to say it’s just as good (and even better in some ways) as those SUVs.

And that’s according to Kelley Blue Book’s website, kbb.com.

This sums up the family-friendliness of the 2014 Honda Accord nicely:

“The Honda Accord has been a top seller for literally decades, but this Accord is the most family friendly yet. The Accord has plenty of rear seat room for child boosters, and the trunk holds a stroller plus lots of groceries. The Accord’s touch-screen interface is easy to use, and LaneWatch, Honda’s cool new side-view camera, virtually makes your passenger-side mirror obsolete.

“But beyond all the various features, the Accord is a midsize family car that you’ll just want to drive. It’s refined, competent on every road surface, the 4-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) combine for plentiful power and very good fuel economy, and it even looks good. If you don’t want an SUV, and just enjoy driving, the Accord proves the family sedan still has plenty of life left.”

Yes, some people just want a great family car, not an SUV and the 2014 Honda Accord is a great place to start.

“People want family sedans for different reasons,” said Tony Carter, general manager at Northwest Honda in Bellingham. “Generally speaking, though, people who want a family sedan want superior gas mileage, plenty of space, a good driving experience, and lots of storage space in the trunk. The 2014 Honda Accord easily fits the bill for all of those things.”

The 2014 Honda Accord comes standard with more technology than you will find in any other family vehicle. Features like LaneWatch and the back-up camera will have you feeling like you paid much more than you really did. It has a very refined, smooth drive that, again, will make you feel like you are driving a much more expensive luxury car. And in that way, it’s a very “un-family” car.

Honda Accord and CR-V Tops in Owner Loyalty, According to IHS Automotive

The Honda Accord and CR-V were each awarded a 2013 Polk Automotive Loyalty Award recognizing superior performance in owner retention for the 2013 model year. The Accord, America’s best-selling car in retail sales*, was honored for owner loyalty in the “Non-Luxury Traditional Mid-Size Car” segment. For the second straight year, the CR-V, America’s best-selling CUV, captured the award in the “Non-Luxury Compact CUV” category.

“Model loyalty largely depends on long-term customer satisfaction and keeping each vehicle at the top of its class, two things at which Honda excels,” said David Hendley, assistant vice president of sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Being recognized by IHS Automotive in two of the largest and most competitive vehicle segments illustrates both the quality of our vehicles and the customer satisfaction efforts of Honda dealers across the country.”

Presented by IHS Automotive, the Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards are based on actual model year purchase/lease activity and recognize manufacturers for superior performance in owner retention – a critical aspect of building and maintaining market share. Owners had such a positive overall experience that they came back to buy another vehicle of the same model, make, or manufacturer. The Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards are the only fact-based awards in the industry based on owner loyalty. This year’s awards are based on analysis of more than 7.4 million actual consumer transactions to determine the winners based on information obtained from state registration and lease transaction information.

3 Car Accidents in 7 Months, Honda Accord Kept My Family Safe

I have written in the past or at least mentioned the fact that my family owns a 2009 Honda Accord (purchased from Northwest Honda dealership in Bellingham). It is our go-to car (in fact it was our only car for a number of years). We have put more than 130,000 miles on it in the 4 years we’ve owned it. It literally brought both of our kids home from the hospital.

And it has protected us all. In fact, we have gotten into three car accidents in the last seven months in our 2009 Honda Accord.

The first one was my fault. It was a fender bender while I was taking my daughter to her first swim lesson. I got distracted looking at the progress of the lovely house I passed occasionally and didn’t stop in time. There was actually much more damage than it appeared, but our Accord kept us perfectly safe.

The second accident occurred a couple months later while I was taking my daughter to her open house for preschool. We were stopped in a left turn lane and someone coming around the corner lost control and smashed into the driver side tire/bumper. Right behind where my daughter was sitting. This time I had some neck/back pain, but, overall, our Accord protected us as good as we could’ve hoped.

Our third accident came just a couple days ago. We were involved in a 4 car pile-up; we were the 3rd car in line when someone simply didn’t stop and smashed into the car behind us which pushed us into the car in front of us. Once again, though, it appears our Honda Accord accepted the brunt and we all walked away shaken but uninjured.

While the number of collisions might be unique, our stories are not. Collisions happen as we go about our daily life. These past few months have made me or grateful than ever that we picked the Honda Accord as our family vehicle because it has kept my family safe…despite the crazy number of collisions in the last seven months.

Honda Leads the Pack with Six Top Safety Pick+ Ratings

If numbers don’t lie, then we can honestly say that Honda vehicles are the safest vehicles on the road. Honda leads all other automakers with six Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Honda Odyssey is the only minivan to be given this safety rating.

Two other models earned the second highest rating of Top Safety Pick.

There is a lot to be proud of here, so below is the complete press release from Honda:

  • Two models also named TOP SAFETY PICK, next highest rating
  • More challenging  IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ testing standards require vehicles to offer collision warning technology

A total of six Honda and Acura models, the most of any auto maker, received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) under its more challenging technology requirements in guidelines implemented for the 2014 model year.

“As the industry leader in TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings for 2013 and now 2014, it’s clear that our commitment to offer advanced safety technologies on mainstream products continues to pay dividends to Honda and Acura customers,” said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. “Honda and Acura vehicles should be at the top of the shopping list for those who value safety ratings and the engineering prowess required to achieve them.”

Four 2014 Honda models were named a TOP SAFETY PICK+ including the Accord Sedan and Coupe; Civic Sedan; and Odyssey, which is the only minivan yet to earn this designation. The Civic Coupe was named a TOP SAFETY PICK. Additionally, two 2014 Acura models, the new MDX and the RLX each achieved TOP SAFETY PICK+ status with the TL earning a TOP SAFETY PICK rating.

The IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK rating recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover and small overlap front crashes based on performance in the Institute’s tests. Under this year’s more challenging requirements, the IIHS is using the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation to recognize vehicles that not only performed well in its crash tests but also are equipped with technologies that help prevent or mitigate front-to-rear collisions. Front collision prevention, which includes both warning systems and automatic braking, is intended to help inattentive drivers avoid rear-ending a stopped or slower-moving vehicle in front of them.

American Honda’s 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles offer a broad range of active and passive safety features along with available leading-edge safety and driver assistive technologies like the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system. FCW uses a camera or radar mounted in the upper portion of the windshield to detect a vehicle ahead. Audible and visuals warnings alert the driver when the system determines that a collision with a detected vehicle or object is likely. Intended as a warning system only, FCW will not automatically activate the brakes, and the driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and avoiding collisions.

Other available safety and driver-assistive technologies available on Honda and Acura vehicles include: Collision Mitigation Braking System; anti-lock brakes; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®); Lane Departure Warning (LDW), LaneWatch™ blind spot display; side curtain airbags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and a front-side airbags.

The company operates two of the world’s most sophisticated crash test facilities and is responsible for numerous pioneering efforts in the areas of crashworthiness, airbag technology, collision compatibility and pedestrian safety. This commitment to safety is rooted in Honda’s goal to be a company that society wants to exist, and it complements the company’s leadership in reducing vehicle emissions, improving fuel efficiency and advancing alternatives to gasoline.

Honda is the only Automaker on TheWeeklyDriver.com’s Top 10 List for 2013

As many other websites are doing, TheWeeklyDriver.com has released a list of its top ten cars for 2013. Honda is the only automaker that had two of its vehicles make the list.

Check out the article here.

The Honda to make their list was the new Honda Accord. Their review in brief? “Who would have thought a Honda Accord would be a luxury car? Think no more. It is.”

The next Honda on the list was the Honda Odyssey. What they had to say in brief: “All the stigma soccer moms and van pool types have against minivans is no longer relevant. The Honda Odyssey is a high-end sedan, really, masquerading as a large, aggressive, powerful people mover that easily seats seven.”

There are links from the article to entire review of each vehicle, but we think this a pretty good start.

“Both the Accord and the Odyssey have really broken the molds of their respective segments,” said Tod McLaughlin of Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “Really, the Accord has set a new standard for affordable sedans and the Odyssey has been called the “modern minivan,” so it’s really great that they both made this list.”

Stop by Apple Valley Honda, Sims Honda, or Northwest Honda today to check out the all new Honda Accord and Honda Odyssey!

Honda Accord Hybrid is “Moving”

We have written a lot about the the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid; some are lengthy reviews and others highlight lengthy reviews. So this article titled the “Top 10 vehicles that moved us in 2013,” provided a brief review of why the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is the best sedan in the industry…and nailed it.

According to this article, “The Accord sets a new standard for hybrids, with a groundbreaking blend of comfort, performance and efficiency. Starting at $29,945, it costs only slightly more than a Toyota Prius — and matches its efficiency in a better-looking, better-equipped, more powerful, full-sized sedan. EPA rating: 50 city, 45 highway. We had no trouble matching those figures in a real-world test. Just for fun, we tried to maximize the mileage with careful driving — and hit 60 mpg over two hours on flat city streets. Seriously. No joke. We are talking about a luxurious 3,600-pound sedan that can turn zero-to-60 mph in seven seconds.”

Here at Apple Valley Honda, we couldn’t agree more.

“The Honda Accord Hybrid is one of the best cars that Honda has ever produced,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager at Apple Valley Honda in Wenatchee. “And that’s saying something. Can you imagine getting more than 5o miles per gallon? And the technology that comes standard on the Accord Hybrid will blow your mind. And it’s entirely affordable. Definitely stop by and check out the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid.”

Website Uses 2014 Honda Accord PHEV to Show How to Optimize Gas Mileage

In the news we here a lot of complaints, and even law suits, when cars’ gas mileage doesn’t match up to the one on the sticker. The title of this article, “2014 Honda Accord PHEV Has Impressive Real World Fuel Economy Statistics,” supports the fact that it does in fact get its reported 50 mpg city/45 mpg highway.

This is encouraging because there have been recent incidences of car manufacturer fudging their fuel efficiency numbers, which is one of the major problems the article sites as the EPA designates the a vehicle’s gas mileage.

The second problem was probably the most entertaining to read about because I live in the Seattle-area and know this to be true: “The second problem is that, for the most part, drivers have no idea what they’re doing. Sad, but true, perhaps they don’t properly maintain their vehicles, they overload them, or they drive too fast. You might have bought the latest and best-fuel-economy vehicle, such as the award-winning 2014 Honda Accord PHEV, but if you can’t drive it responsibly, you’ll never see fuel economynumbers anywhere near those on the EPA window sticker.”

There is also a really great infographic that illustrates exactly how the way a driver drives affects the gas mileage they get out of their car. Check it and slow down! :)
