The Honda Accord and Honda Civic are the top two most stolen and recovered vehicles in 2012 in the United States, according to a new LoJack Corp. study.
This is the Honda Accord’s third year at the #1 spot. The Honda Civic moved up to the #2 spot and the Toyota Camry fell to #3.
Why are the Honda Accords and Honda Civics the most stolen? It’s not that complicated, according to the writer of this article:
“The reason these cars top the list is an obvious one — these are popular models. But D.J. Thompson, director of law enforcement at LoJack, tells me that these cars aren’t just on the top of the list because there are more of them on the road than most other makes and models.”
Basically, Honda makes awesome cars, so more people buy them, which means more people steal them because there is a bigger market.
“It’s true, the Honda Accord and Honda Civic are some of the most stolen vehicle, but only because it they are two of the best and, therefore, most popular vehicles, on the road,” said Tod McLaughlin, general manager of Apple Valley Honda in Apple Valley. “In a way, it’s rather flattering.”
I guess there is a dark side to being some of the best-selling cars in the market. But should that scare people away? The writer of the article has experience with this exact issue when his own 1997 Honda Civic was stolen and here’s what he said:
“So did I abandon Honda for a less innocuous brand? Nope. They’re reliable, efficient. I’m comfortable with them. But my new car is a Honda Fit. At least that model’s not on LoJack’s top 10 list — yet.”
That’s right, Honda’s reliability and efficiency keep this loyal customer coming back even after he’s had a taste of the dark side of popularity.
