Honda Develops Environmentally-Friendly Automobile Painting Process

Honda not only prides itself on innovative vehicles, but also innovative systems. Honda has applied that creativity and eye for environmental-friendliness to its automobile painting system called “Honda Smart Ecological Paint.”

According to this article, “It will reduce the amount of paint materials used, eliminate 40 percent of painting processes, and reduce 40 percent of CO2 emissions compared to traditional painting methods.”

How did Honda achieve something others in the industry have not? By developing a highly-functional material for the base coat that allows it to cut out one step of painting and one step of baking. So instead of being a four-coat, three-bake process like most automakers, Honda will use a three-coat, two-bake process.

Multiply that by the number of cars Honda kicks out and you can see how big of a difference that will make.

“In addition, Honda will also introduce a wall-mounted paint robot system with a built-in quick load, quick wash paint tank. The company said the technology will lead to a significant improvement in painting efficiency and pollution.”
